I can only imagine the outcome if a few more weeks had gone by. This was not some quick fix because of snow on the ground. What had this DV promised the owners of the dogs? Titles? Sales? People do your research before you entrust your dog with someone for any reason. Data base fans, promote the many who do things right. The DV and TH of the world carve out a little fame and fortune because a number of people train and promote the proper way to keep GSDs. We should hate the parasites.

Hundmutter,
I am surprised at you a wee bit. Why should it matter if this isn't the worse case? It is still awful any way you want to peer into those cages and what used to be a livable, residential home. Why the offender is not co-operating with the indentification of the dogs she claims are not owned by her, is just another one of those baffling mysteries! Is there a legal reason she would want to do that, instead? I wonder.
Also, remember the reputation of this breeder begs for an impeccable standard to be maintained. I would think, any way.
The claims of charlatans showing up with phoney paper work.... well, that actually sounds like something that has been done before, too. So, whom to believe? Hmm?

Bee: It's precisely because crates were parked at all angles including
in front of her stove that made me think this may have been (only
speculating, clearly I cannot KNOW) more of a temporary measure.
Anyone who has cleaned as many kennels as I have over a lifetime
is able to make judgements about "how much" / "how long", etc.
All I've asked is that people give a little credit to the possible causes
and time parameters of this nasty situation. People who have never
attempted to keep multiple dogs do not always appreciate just how
difficult it can get, and how quickly. None of what I have said in any of
my posts on this thred excuses or tries to justify what has happened;
but some shelter people get quoted, and some posters pop up, with no
apparent thought spent in consideration of what may have led to
this mess, and people just post one word comments on how shameful
and disgusting it is. They begin to sound like PETA people, hyperventilating.
Plus there is still the question of whether this was the first time her methods
had been exposed, and if so, why there was no plan for putting the situation
right, by reducing numbers, taking on added help, starting a building plan,
whatever. Just immediate seizure.
You are, I take it, familiar with the story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf ?
Every time a situation like the current one gets hyped up to be the worst
that can happen, the world loses a little compassion for the huge number
of really, REALLY, bad long-term cases of animal abuse, I think; and I cannot
believe that is a good thing in the long run. I also think it is NOT inappropriate to
draw distinctions between situations where there MAY be some mitigating
circumstances [ and MIGHT be some reasons to have a little compassion for
the human(s) responsible ?], and cases where, far from being shrouded in mysteries,
the conditions show without doubt that an owner is being, and has for some time
been, deliberately totally callous and uncaring. Why would you be surprised at my
wanting to stress that we have nowhere near got all the facts about this case, and
that (in the interests of 'fairness', which you have already noted is a 'thing' with me !)
all the 'sides' and possible factors involved ought to be addressed before condemning
this woman as completely 'out of order', as many posters already appear to think, to
the extent that anyone like zdog who asks about aspects of the case is yelled at.
As to ownership of these dogs, who knows why she won't help with it ? Who really
knows, even, that what she is reported as doing / saying about ownership is the truth ?
There seem to be enough questions around this case to at least raise a little suspicion
that there is a lot more to the story than we are hearing.

Maybe I'm one of them? That's funny. There isnt a person alive that knows me that would ever believe I'd be trying gain the possession of a show dog, let alone some I have never met and in an underhanded manner. But if it makes you feel better to think it, go right ahead.
And apparently I have to point out yet again, I do NOT think these dogs were kept in even close to acceptable conditions. I also think there was a lot wrong with the initial reports of what supposedly went down, from the words of those supposedly involved. Lots of backtracking going on.
Who knows, I'll never see one of those dogs, I'll never know the players invloved. My dogs are well cared for, and I have enough doubt about the "rescue" and the kennel owner to find both sides to a lot to answer for.

Hundmutter, you clearly have spent too much thought coupled with life experience and observation of all the info we've been able to gather. Clearly it is better to react, and react quickly out of emotion :)

Handmutter as someone who has on many occasions cared for many dogs I have to say your statement is a complete load of crap and your lack of outrage is telling. There is no situation where this should have happened. When you get in over your head you stop breeding litters, you stop acquiring and you re-home, you simply do what normal people do, you do the right thing. This woman either doesn't care or has mental issues (or both) and should never be allowed to care for animals again.
As for "immediate siezure" you are talking about things you know nothing of. How do you know they weren't trying to work with her to sort this out and help? You are guilty of drawing conclusions just as you condemn others you think are drawing conclusions.
The feces (some bloody) and urine took many months to get like it is shown in the pictures. The dog with the injury I happen to know had infection to the bone and required surgery. This was clearly an injury left untreated.
There really aren't that many "questions" around this case. It's very simple. She abused these poor dogs and you seem to defend her.

This amount of dogs is impossible to handle
If I am not able to take care of my dogs, I shouldn´t own them any longer ( and for sure I shouldn´t breed them ).
Keeping dogs in crates like laying hens is animal abuse.
Cold weather happens every year - so what?
Do you really believe that there are 20 or 30 "nice weather" kennels on the properties ( a dog house and some straw, and a German Shepherd is fine during winter time ) ?
Do you really believe that these dogs were walked on a regular basis ( besides the "show" dogs ) ?
Dogs are intelligent, social, and CLEAN animals.
I´m neither an animal rights activist nor am I highly sensitive, but all of this is just horrible.
In my personal opinion this is the result of the attempt to make a living out of dogs without a clue.
Maybe she thought - one high rated dog ( Dante ) = always good dogs and a lot of money...
Someone treating animals like this trying to tell me "she loves her dogs" is living on another planet than I do
The most painful thought for me is that probably even these dogs still "love" their owner / jailer.

Ah, the voice of reason, Susie. Thank you.

Those conditions were horrible, in fact I am amazed those 2 litters of puppies, especially the youngest even survived. Obviously at least some of the dogs were being fed which questions how anyone could put food in those crates and ignore the filth. All the info and previous interactions with DV just leads me to be more certain that she needs some mental help. The level of denial and continued efforts to keep this operation going indicates that she would be back in this situation if she's allowed even 1 dog. Caution to anyone with any kind of co-ownership agreement; have written contracts and signed co-ownership registrations from the AKC, SV whatever and have your own copies. Also make sure you KNOW what conditions the dog is kept in, visit-don't take no for an answer, if this person wants your money see where the dog lives.

Suzie you are spot on. I think we all wanted to sympathize with Dawn , you know "there but by the Grace of God, go I" . But you know what?
After seeing the photos, I just sat and cried. Filth, dog and puppies in grossly overcrowded, dank , horrendous conditions.
Twenty Five years ago, I had several dogs and horses. In a very short time span, I gave birth to a disabled child, divorced her father for cheating,
Both of my parents died, and I lost my home...everything. I was devasted. BUT before things could get bad, I GAVE my dogs to my friends
with all the papers too...I gave or sold all of my horses. I kept one dog, a male family companion. I knew that in order for me to
do them justice they HAD to go to live with other people, because my whole life was changing dramatically. I didn't want to have them involved in
a very tough situation. It took me a year with my kids and my
one dog, to start my own business, then another few years (b/c I was working a lot to start the business) to feel comfortable enough to have a second dog.
My life changed in a flash, but I never allowed it to impact my animals, negatively. Did it break my heart to let them go ? YOU BET. But I did it
because it is what any thinking , intelligent and compassionate adult MUST DO.
Dawn's friends still defend her, amazingly, even with the HORRIFIC photos, of filthy dogs, overcrowded conditions. So I really don't want to hear
from anyone (not aimed at you Suzie) that "Oh she had a hard time...something happened" THINGS HAPPEN. TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY.
Anyone that can defend this woman, and the disaster she left is really NOT GETTING IT or are in TOTAL DENIAL. Personally I would be hard pressed
to want my name associated as a defender of this person. I have to wonder about the people that ARE defending her, and what they believe is
"love" for animals..that is scary.
Look at the photos, folks. This didn't happen because "oopsie she forgot to clean the kennels for a day or two" This didn't happen even in a week.
This is long term , look the other way, lack of give a damn .
There were baby puppies in that filth too. Since she sold dogs for a pretty penny, where did the money go? Certainly not to the care of the
dogs seen in these photos. Maybe she is mental? I guess you would have to be "off" to think this is okay?
I don't know. All I know is that she and her buddies seem far more concerned with Dawn's 'image"
than with the actual dogs, themselves..some even stating "ohhhhh she LOVED her dogs and they were WELL FED" I want to throw up.
Even my disabled child with a limited grasp of the world can tell you THIS WAS WRONG ON EVERY LEVEL..NO EXCUSE.
I urge folks to donate to help the shelter now having to deal with this mess. Here is the link:

If you look at the article "Dunham GSDs Update" you can read a synopsis of what they are dealing with
also there are pictures underneath..if you can stomach them.
This is a person who should never own dogs again, for any reason. She is not capable. She has proven this.
It will be interesting to see the veterinary reports after the trial. I imagine they will be pretty telling.
Remember she "loves " her dogs so much she is also REFUSING to identify them or co owners to get them to the right people...nice.
