This feature was discontinued before, because of people like you. Why don't you take up your personnel problem with me in a PM, instead of your disruption?

Grow up, Midgie and say why you disagree with Joan's opinions.  Those buttons are not intended to for personal issues with posters, they are to like or dislike what that poster has said regarding that particular thread.

  I am so very sorry that you have had such a bad experience.   However, your  experience with schutzhund clubs is NOT typcial--you have simply been dealing with a bunch of schmucks, apparently.

Asking about the dog is NOT necessarily  being judgmental or exclusionary.  From the very beginning of my "schutzhund adventure," I learned that people will

(1)  Ask about your dog's bloodlines--especially  when they like the dog/puppy.

(2)  Because newbies often have NO CLUE about their puppy's/dog/s bloodlines, people ask where they got it, as a means of ascertaining/confirming the bloodlines, or that the puppy they like is a_____ puppy, as they thought/hoped.  ( I started keeping a copy of the pedigree in the car, as a result)

(3)  Schutzhund people , especially when they like your dog, will learn and remember a newbie's dog's name and bloodlines,  and seem to have a real problem remembering the human's name at all.  At least, that was my experience.  As a newbie,  I went to visit other clubs  when they had trials, and had strangers walk up to me and say, " I hear you have a really nice little bitch."   I would have wondered how they knew diddly-squat about me, but, really, how many black women have you seen in schutzhund/IPO?    It was a pretty safe bet for them that I was the one with the bitch they'd heard about.  But, they did not know my name at all--that took another year or so. .

LOL, mystere! This was true when I was involved with horses, too. I often didn't know the names of the newer owners in the barn, and would just say, "Oh, that's Dusty's mom!"

Last training session I was at, I got chatting with a new member who I'd seen train his very nice WL bitch the previous week. I told him I really liked her, and she had fantastic movement for a WL, and would he PLEASE tell me what lines/breeder she was from?

He was quite happy to oblige... 

 

Also, I must say that, in fairness, clubs often do have a membership "cap" from time to time. It is about resources.  When there is only one helper ( or one reliable one), clubs simply cannot afford to have too many members with dogs to be worked.  That would be too many dogs for the helper to consistently and safely work, and it can take far too much time for members to get through training each training day.   My club in the past  has had  membership caps periodically, based on resources (helpers) versus number of dogs to be worked (generally about 15-17 on even the bad-weather days).

   Sometimes the club's membership cap depends on the best interests of the club at the time.    Would the cap have temporarily been suspended, had an excellent helper  (known not to be carrying bs baggage and attitude) shown up to join?  Absolutely!  Would it have been lifted for a former member who moved back to the area?  If they had been a good, supportive and contributing club member, almost assuredly.  But, had it been one of those dead-weight, self-absorbed folks who might as well not have been a member in the first place, or an abusive helper with "issues" ?   Probably not.  

There are almost always at least two sides to situations where someone has not been allowed to join a club.  Sometimes, it is just a group of rotten people  that the person was lucky not to have joined.    How many people have been taken aback by the negative personalities and attitudes that no one even tried to hide from the newby long enough to collect a dues check.

Mystere's second point, about asking about peoples' dogs

If Shutzhund clubs are anything like the UK clubs centred on

conformation showing, this is equally true.  And the extent to

which newbies know about / show interest in their pup's ante-

cedents is a darn good way of starting to suss out how much

- or little - they already know about GSDs.  It isn't unkindly meant,

its just a way of establishing at what level to pitch initial conversations

and activities.

Most cattle people don't use electric prods routinely.  If you are good with the cattle you want to work them smooth and quiet.  A 2000 lb bull will just get pissed off if you use a cattle prod on him.  Most of the people who rely on a cattle prod to work cattle are amateurs and dopes.  We got cattle prods when they first came out and later got the newer versions but we left them on a shelf after we saw the results.  Like any weapon they just escalate the fight and create panic in the animals.  Most cattle will be frightened by the pain but I have seen bulls get really mad and turn around and no cattle prod is going to stop them when they get mad.  Once they are mad and upset a large adult bull becomes damn near impossible to handle ( leave him alone until he calms down ) and I expect dogs are no different with either a prod or collar .. works for some and not for others.
