day 5 - jonathan hunt reporting from haiti calls the u.n. effort "a complete and utter failure."  it appears that the search and rescue teams are effective and continue to pull people from the collapsed buildings, but there is still no water, food or medical supplies.  when obama announced his allocation of 100 million, he claimed they were working closely with the haitian government.  from all accounts, the government is nonexistant.  more than half of their officials are either dead or missing.  even the president, who has survived, is homeless.  i'm sorry, but from everything i have seen and heard, the money and supplies still have not reached the victims.  this is horrible.  even planes carrying aid have been turned away and not allowed to land.  why can't they use helicopters to drop supplies in on them?  the looting and violence will only get worse as people become more desperate.  i cannot bring myself to defend those who only seem intent on collecting money yet hiding behind beaurocratic b.s. to find excuses why they cannot deliver the goods.  don't forget what rham emmanuel said, "never let a good crises go to waste."  and also don't forget what happened to red cross money that was donated specifically for 9/11 victims.  they came up with at least a dozen excuses for not distributing the funds.

I am against aid to any country on a routine basis.
You people that think the money and goods are going to get to the people that need
it are living in fantasyland.  The money and goods will be pilfered off and the shantytowns will rise again to await the next disaster.  Has the first soldier or aid worker been hacked down by a machete yet?

We cannot save the world, we are circling the drain ourselves.  WAKE UP!

"jonathan hunt reporting from haiti calls the u.n. effort "a complete and utter failure."  it appears that the search and rescue teams are effective and continue to pull people from the collapsed buildings, but there is still no water, food or medical supplies. "

Are you and ol' Jonathan saying that all the video is fake?  I've seen quite a bit of video of teams of medical personnel, entire teams of doctors and nurses, trucks handing out water, aid workers handing out plates of food, medical supplies being unloaded, etc. etc.  How can you POSSIBLY say none of that happened????  Who's Jonathan Hunt?  Is he Fox "News"?

"i'm sorry, but from everything i have seen and heard, the money and supplies still have not reached the victims."

What are you watching?  I've seen aid getting through all day.

"even planes carrying aid have been turned away and not allowed to land."

As you've been told repeatedly, planes were only turned away when there was no room.  They waited their turn and then landed.  You act as though they flew away never to return.

"why can't they use helicopters to drop supplies in on them?
"

Good lord.  LOOK at the video.  Helicopter drops have been occuring for a few days now.  Again, where are you getting this information?

"and also don't forget what happened to red cross money that was donated specifically for 9/11 victims.  they came up with at least a dozen excuses for not distributing the funds."

I specifically remember the post-9/11 Red Cross commercials.  In the days immediately after 9/11 the commercials were very specific that the money would be used, some for the victims and some to be held in case of future attacks.  Remember, at the time we didn't know if 9/11 was going to be repeated on 9/15, 9/20, etc.  Some of the commercials talked about using the money for improved communication devices, which as you recall, the poor communication cost hundreds of NY firefighters their lives.  However, in the aftermath suddenly most people totally forgot about putting money aside for possible future attacks, or spending it on improved equipment, and everybody was horrified that every cent wasn't going to the families.

Even about something as straight-forward as disaster relief and the idiot "political conspiracists," racists and plain nuts rear their heads. VERY disappointing...but no less than should have been expected, given past history. Sad. Hodie and Tess: You can fight the "good fight" attempting to enlighten, but I think it is a waste of energy and time, given your audience. I don't have the patience. :-) I choose to expend my energy making donations and encouraging my friends to do the same, as donating to the Red Cross is so simple by text, to Mercy Corp because it is local, and to other medical and SAR efforts.

by hodie on 18 January 2010 - 02:01

Your point is well taken Mystere. Some clearly don't have a clue about what is happening. Is it all better now? Are the thousands and thousands of injured all receiving the treatment they so desperately need? Are all the people who have no food or water getting it? Of course not!! But help is there and more will be done each hour to help. Those who do not understand the magnitude of this event or how difficult a situation it is to help people in situations like this, or those who have ulterior motives never will get it. I do not write for them. I too have little patience, but for a few who want to learn or express their feelings, maybe it helps a little to try to provide information and perspective. Financially, I have given all I can. I wish I had a lot of money to give and I wish I was in a position to go and volunteer my medical skills. Each of us, some of us that is, will do what we can.

heh, i am not the enemy here.  some of you are acting like i am.  i am
concerned over people dying because it is taking so long to get to them.
how does that make me bad?  i have helped in the aftermath of natural
disasters, i have donated money, labor and supplies.  heck, i have even
donated blood.  i am not the bad guy here.  and what is wrong with saying
we can do better????
