When was the last time you legitimately trained a dog yourself?
by Gustav on 09 August 2017 - 15:08
I very seldom talk about things I'm not knowledable or experienced in....rarely, I have good knowledge of dogs in general, have trained with folks with service dogs, know people with service dogs, STILL I would in NO way argue or question YOU about service dog training, needs, policies, or what you should or shouldn't do. Frankly, I would defer to your FIRST hand knowledge, but that's just me. I don't know everything about police dogs, but I think there is a good chance I'm more knowledgeable than the folks on here questioning my opinions. Doesn't make me know everything, just puts me in same situation as you when it comes to service dogsin comparison to me.

Gustav, do you FACTUALLY know the dog in question ? Do you FACTUALLY know he is not in poor health, to go with the grade 1 body estimation ? If not, I suggest your memories of other dogs, years ago - assuming you do never train like this in today's world, as you appear to have been saying - looking 'like that' but being healthy, maybe depend on memory. And as I tried to convey in an earlier post, the things we remember are coloured by what we 'knew', what we believed in, what we were told by seniors AT THAT TIME. You haven't explained how the 'knowledge' you have that those early dogs were ok and healthy absolutely leads you to conclude THIS dog, in THIS year will also be 'healthy'. Or how that 'fact', if true, justifies the method being used, or the theatre in which it is being used. In THIS year, given what we now realise about training and motivation, that we might not have realised 30 - 40 years ago.
I don't have any 'say' in what is done with War Dogs; in my own land, let alone yours. But if the 'powers that be' persuade me it is necessary, AND cost effective of tax dollars, to do it that way, they at least stand some chance of convincing me they have to do it. But PB Fla Sheriffs Dept ??? Nah.

In case we are talking about the past-just an assumption- (1990 and earlier) I am not able to remember any structured "police dog training" in the States ( I sent dogs over there, tested dogs, and have been in the States for quite some while during that time ). Every local police station tended to decide, train, buy on their own - no standards at all...The local "success" based on one trainer- some of them good, a lot of them not able to distinguish between fear biting and aggression.
Shit, forgot to mention-we trained at Fort Ort, too........

It seems like no matter what is ACTUALLY said, it will be somehow spun to appear as if someone was defending that dog's physical condition, which I don't see and certainly don't mean myself. I don't think it's actually a failure to comprehend the written word, although it certainly seems that way, especially in the case of Swarnendu, but rather an attempt to put words in other people's mouths for the sole sake of pot-stirring. I think Swarnendu is plenty smart enough to understand what is actually being said, but would rather push buttons for the sake of debate.
I personally don't think the dog looks good but I also personally know that a dog can be in a protocol of feeding that includes fasting one (or more) days per week and be quite healthy. I have a house full of them. A dog doesn't need to end up far underweight just because of fasting. To conclude that fasting is cruel because of this photo is a huge leap. We don't know enough about the dog in the photo to know why he looks like that and if he is healthy and just too thin or whether something else is going on.
BE, I didn't say "no one." I said "very few." So, if that was an attempt at drama, it failed. I will stand by "very few." Look at the total population of dog owners. How many need their dog to perform or they both die? Very few.

We are living in 2017, not in 1975.
TODAY we know a lot more about dog behavior than 40 years ago - it's NOT NECESSARY to starve a dog for 60 hours to perform well any more-we KNOW BETTER.
But as soon someone is not willing to use humane training methods although it's possible it's abuse.
100 years ago dentists pulled teeth without anaesthesia - it worked. Any dentist pulling teeth without anaesthesia TODAY is wrong, ABUSING it's patient. It's called "progress".

@BE...really? If it makes you feel better to think I haven't trained in past 10, 20, years, so be it.

NAPWDA
APCA
NTPDA
USPCA
They are national organizations, that I think will adequately answer your questions!

The picture is just a picture-I have seen a lot of young, active dogs looking like that. For any further "judgement" we would need to know about the health, the age, the food, the training schedule, and so on.
For me it's about the 60 hours -
In case you feed more than needed for 4 1/2 days, the dog will still look good after 7 days ( given there is enough water ).
It just doesn't make sense, it's cruel, and it's useless in case of modern training techniques...

How many of them have been there in the seventies/eighties???
The departments I dealt with during that time had no "National Standards" at all.
All of them were just "learning by doing".
