"Maybe if Allen were a Presidential candidate I'd recognize his name. Not a clue who he is, sorry."
He was, in Republican circles, a frontrunner for the presidential nomination. However, someone on the other side realized how much of a threat he would have been, and they put all of their efforts into neutralizing him as a candidate. They did it in his run for reelection to the US senate two years ago.
"Who the hell even thinks of shit like that in this day and age?"
Democrats. EVERY time they mentioned Allen, they referred to him as George "Felix" Allen.
Anti-semetism isn't pretty, and it infuriates me.

Oh, I think the Republicans have done their share of name calling too. So the Republicans decided to not nominate Allen because the Democrats intimated he was a Jew?

No, he lost his senate race. And, the point is, democrats are slamming McCain (even though he has not done so) for supposedly insinuating something nefarious by using Obama's middle name. Others have used O's middle name, but the official McCain campaign has not done so.

Mickey, give me a break! I live in Northern Virginia and I know all about George Allen.
What sunk George Allen was his comment to a South Asian who attended one of his campaign events as "macaca" - a racially derogative term that he would most likely have learned from his mother who lived in Tunisia and was used by French colonials to describe the "natives" of that country. He was in the lead in the polls and considered to be a shoo-in for re-election.
Here is the wikipedia link to the term:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macaca_(slur)
This is taken from the wikipedia article:
"Allen's mother, born Henrietta Lumbroso, is of French Tunisian descent and some commentators have suggested that she may have learned the pejorative during her childhood and introduced it to her son. Even though Allen claimed that he made up the word and said that he did not understand its derogatory meaning, it led to a media outcry. After a two-week outpour of negative publicity, Allen publicly apologized for his statement and asserted that he in no way intended those words to be offensive."
Here is the you tube link where Allen used the term in the presence of an all-white audience in Southern Virginia

Allen went on to apologize for the slur that he used after his campaign initially said that he was commenting on the "mohawk" haircut of the South Asian - never mind, that the guy actually had a mullet.
Here is Allen's apology and explanation:

This incident turned off the independent and moderate Republicans especially in Northern Virginia and combined with the unpopularity of the Republican party killed Allen's political future. But it was the "macaca" incident which sealed his fate. He was expected to be re-elected prior to the incident.
Re the name Felix and it association with it being Jewish, this honestly is news to me. I have to say that I never once heard Allen's middle name being used while the 2006 campaign was going on. I also did not realize that Felix was a name associated with Jews - in fact, I have my doubts about the accuracy of that statement. But, even if is viewed as a Jewish name, what does i

Let's talk about hateful, dirty campaigning. Pure filth:
Onward Christian Soldiers
Many of you are asking if I was truly unaware of my Jewish heritage until the other day. Let me assure you that yes, of course, my statement is true. I had absolutely no inkling of a whisp of an idea.
Now, I first heard an accusation that I had Jewish blood well over a decade ago. And it came up periodically over the years. But I naturally assumed it was just people casting aspersions. You never think something like that could actually be true. You never think something like this can happen to you.
Now it has. (And apparently there's no mistake here, because we've looked into every possible angle.) So I am proudly standing up to embrace my heritage and the fact that, according to the Torah, I was born a Jew... with... Jewish blood flowing through my... own veins.
Thanks for standing by me during this difficult and trying time. We must all try to remember that Jesus himself was a Jew. And Jews are known as "God's chosen people." Perhaps this is God's way of telling Virginians tochoose George Felix Allen for Senate. God works in mysterious ways.
Whatever the case, you should all know that I still intend to represent you as a loyal Christian Republican.
Your Son of the South,
Fightin' Felix
