Hello everyone,
I am confused regarding the use of Shedding Rake and Furminator or getting my dogs shaved, my GSDs are stock haired. I live in a hot climate area of Pakistan i.e Multan. Mainly my concerns are coping with the hot summers and heavy shedding.
Kindly suggest me whether I should get my GSDs shaved by electric machine or use Furminator and Shedding rake for thinning the coat. It gets hot like hell by the start of May. In extremely hot climate natural hair shedding is none less than a pain in a_ _. Hair flowing every where are a mere source of irritation and hygiene problems.
To cut it short I am left with following options, kindly let me know which one is more appropriate keeping in view the climate i.e 50 degree Celsius in extreme cases.
I am looking forward to your expert n seasoned openions.

NEVER, EVER shave your GSD, the hair is an insulator from the hot weather and cold...just use the shedding tool and depending on the coat the ferminator, personally I don't like it. It seems to cut the coat...

Yes I totaly agree with Krazy Bout K9s NEVER SHAVE YOUR GERMANSHEPHERD NO MATTER HOW HOT IT GETS the coat will protect the dog from getting burned in hot weather , use the rake and if you have a Vaccum cleaner, just make sure the dog has plenty of water and is out of direct sun.

Agree, never shave them! Use the shedding rake and brush DAILY if shedding is a problem. If you do it daily, it should take less than 5 minutes.

I was a groomer and had to constantly convince people their dogs needed their coats.. they are a thermal layer between their skin and the elements... shaving not only will not stop shedding (just little razor cut hairs) but it will expose them to the weather directly.. and that is not good at all
As long as they have shade and plenty of water, they should be fine... a fan to move air if it can be done would help.. shade cloth material if available)
Neither a shedding blade or a Furminator does the proper job....... an undercoat rake, a slicker brush and a comb in a 3-step process (in that order) are what is needed for really heavy grooming... thereafter running a slicker brush over them until the next big coat blow should be enough... every couple days

I purchased the furminator to try something new and people raved about on the links I read but I find it hard to beleive that those fine teeth will only pull the dead hair from below with as thick as the gsd hair is. Don't get me wrong I had a pile of hair and I saw no end in sight it just kept coming out. I have used a rake with a straight blade and a slicker brush for 30 years on all my dogs and I brush them 3 times a week on average. Lets face it we own GSD and they shed sometimes of the year more so than others but I don't know if I there is a better time to use the furminator or not.

There is a combing rake that I use (and can not remember the brand right now) that has two rows of rotating spindles.
One row combs the outer coat and one combs the under coat.
With fixed spindles the rake gets stuck as you are pulling it through.
The combing rake with the rotating spindles does not get stuck.
My dogs used to hate getting combed, now they love it.
It is, by far, the best combing device I have found for brushing out a GSD.

I agree, rake...slicker....comb. Also, Mirra-Coat does cut down on shedding, due to nourishing coat and skin. I cannot live without mirra-coat.

I use a rake. I show my dogs and all I have is a rake and a pin brush. I've seen a GSD get over-Furminated. The Furminator is a blade and it does start breaking the top coat, same thing with a shedding blade. The dog looked all patchy. I don't let any Furminators near my GSDs.

I've used a Furminator before, and I've used a rake. I prefer the rake over the Furminator, hands down.
