Does anybody know who is taking goods (clothing, food etc..) for the Japanese Relief effort?

Every site I've looked at has a spot for money donations but nothing for goods donations.

Don¿t take up a collection of goods to send over

After the tsunami tons of used clothing were donated, much of it inappropriate to the climate and culture. There were winter hats, coats and gloves donated to southern Thailand and mountains of donated clothing dumped beside the road in India. Donated goods can clog ports and prevent more critical relief items from getting through. Ports can only hold and process so many goods and often the port authorities have difficulty sorting through everything arriving to get it processed and out the doors. Please do not take up collections of medicine, clothing, baby formula, or food for shipment, or show up on your own to hand out money or goods. Although well intentioned, this can actually make the situation worse as it adds to the confusion, diverts resources, and may lead to aid dependency.

My sisters husband is stationed over there and he told us to send directly to the US Navy and Air Bases.

They need lots of Baby stuff. Anything baby is the demand I hear. Baby foods, diapers, blankets, clothes. I sent out a day ago to these addy's. I love baby shopping, so donating money to the RedCross was out 4 me. I learned my lesson there with Haiti anyhows. I'll be shopping again this weekend and sending more. Good Luck.

I agree that collecting goods is a very good gesture, but I would check to see if items are being excepted before moving forward. I figure cash is best, relief organizations are in a better position to allocate resources based on the demand. I would also venture to guess their dollar will buy more, then ours purchasing goods at a store.

My wife is Japanese and is from small town in Minamisoma that was hard hit by the tsunami. Her family all made it through the ordeal, but the town of Odaka where the live is gone. Their house is 5km from the coast and was spared, however all the remaining residents have been evacuated because the town is within 20kms of the nuclear plant. My wife is a waitress at a Japanese restaurant and the owner is going to donate all the profits from the resturant to the relief fund this upcoming Sunday.

My wife and I would like to thank everyone that helps out.

BabyEagle,

Wow, I don't think you guys are financing Japan's defense, it looks like you are Japan's defense.
