Now i was wondering what is the prefix or whatever for a certified dog in narcotics and patrol is it a "PSD" (police service dog) or is there a working acronym for a dual purpose k9?

Depends on where you work and how much attention you pay to titles...some people love them, so, you have police service dog, patrol dog, dual purpose dog, cross certified dog, etc.

Sorry to derail this thread, but how does one make sure the dog is truly a certified/titled police dog & not someone just blowing smoke up your rear?
Are they (k9's) registered somewhere one can look up a name or does one have to call the dept. said dog is supposed to have worked out of or ????

Thanks!

That depends on who is telling you that it is, a private individual or an agency. Private individuals can train a dog for police work, but, no certs Agencies can train a dog, but, there are no National standards so no cert there either. Some agencies have their own certs, mostly for insurance purposes, but, the easiest way to find out, if the dog worked or is working for an agency is to call the agency themselves and ask.

Who certified this dog and are you working for a police agency?
If you dont know what to call it and i dont know why you are so caught up in titles and names, pick one i suggested in my first answer.

In NJ a PSD must be certified by graduating from a police academy. For patrol dog the academy is 14 to 16 weeks. The criteria for the academy is promulgated and approved by the Attorney General Office of the State. The same with Scent school for narcotics or explosives....these dogs are certified both on street and on paper.

I think the poster is asking because she may have sold a dog to a Police Dept., otherwise she would not be asking these questions, because she would or should know the answer!

According to this link:https://www.pedigreedatabase.com/forum.read?mnr=793845-certified-my-malinois-dual-purpose

She certified her Mal in dual purpose, so one would think she'd know the answer?
