I generally end on a jackpot of treats with a scent pad and pull the dog away while its eating the jackpot. The jackpot is easily discernable between the track and it because of the type of steps to create the scent pad.

I've always had an article at the penultimate end of the track , with a toy another 6-10' away, at the very end. The dog is tracking to get that toy to play. I teach the artlicles off the track, around the house, even as puppies. They end up thinking that finding an artilce is a "good thing" and there is no article avoidance. One dog kept working the tract , trying to find that damn article, when a crow had taken the thing off the track. Fortunately, spectators saw the crow take the article.
