the dog biting the handler is in fight drive!this dog is in another zone due to the gunfire.as a police k9 handler, i can tell you that police dogs are routinely subjected to gunfire exercises because thats real life not sport.take your well behaved sport dog outside, load a few .38 or .357 blank rounds in a revolver and have the decoy fire directly at the dog . then send your dog as the decoy is firing.don't be surprised if your sport doggy won't go out. this is fight or flight time, hence the word FIGHT!(threat, kill, dominate).some of the tougher police k9's are so worked up at this point that they are totally zoned out and its easy for a handler to get bit like the one on the video. it goes with the territory. this is not sport!

Anton, not to doubt you or anything, but I introduce young puppies to a running lawnmower two feet from their food. We also introduce our dogs to gunfire both during OB and protection. A dog high enough in prey drive will zone out everything else to get its prize. Dogs that get overloaded in drive and can't cap it tend to release their frustration on anything that comes near. They are not stable dogs. Prime example of the difference between proper thinking and macho thinking towards protection (whether sport or real)... A friend and I saw a decoy working up some dogs, getting them really ramped up. Another dog got out of its kennel and ran up to a hitching post (for horses) and bit it really hard. The post was between the dog and the decoy with no other boundaries between them. After the handler collected his dog, my friend said "Now THAT is a badass dog. Did you see what it did to that post?!" My comment was (not so quietly said) "Stupid sh!t, the decoy is over THERE!" Like I said, more drive than brains.

Come on Mike,Your being kinda harsh on the Malinois...lol. I respect your opinion but your way off on this one,You had it in for the clip as soon as you saw it,typical mal, bite first think later,if at all. Timing could not had been more perfect if they had wanted it to be with the hostage situation. the decoy had hardly touched the upper door when contact from dog one was made from behind.Would you as a K-9 Officer expose a hostage to a potential dog bite and or crossfire? What better place to be at that point(besides home in bed) then where the hostage was? Keeping in mind this was a training exercise,I think you might be over reacting just a little no? Granted the decoy needs some work but not everybody is cut out to be one, many times it is just another cop just slow enough leaving the locker room to get snagged for a couple of hrs of bite work.........I'm not claiming to be Jo Dog trainer or decoy but I don't think I would find anything any of the dogs on the clip did laughable? As always, best to you, stay safe Charlie

Charlie, maybe you misunderstood me or I didn't get it across quite right. I just thought it was funny (but also good tactics) that the "hostage" made sure that door stayed pulled shut when the dogs came. It was a nice showing of intensity in the bites, but I disagree that this showed anything definitive in fight drive as some claimed. And yes, I'm prejudiced against Mals (anything that looks more feminine than a GSD bitch and tend to overload in drive is not for me) and seeing as this is a GSD site, I'm not out of place (at least I hope it's not a closet Mal site). I'd still like to see those dogs with some real pressure put on them, then if they still show the same intensity and strength that would be great...however that one still has a nerve/ability to cap problem.

I think for the most part Mike you and I think/like the same maybe minus the Malinois....lol. My heart has and always will be with the Shepherd (DDR) but I feel the ultimate working dog is the Belgian Malinois.I can not speak for the ones on the clip other then what I have,I do not know them nor their handlers, but I do know a good many teams with that man / mal combo that kick ass and take names, certianly nothing to mess with on the field or street.Your right, this is a GSD board, and this has gotten side tracked, sorry for that. Charlie
