Hello...Can anybody give some information on signs and reasons for false pergnancy........Thank you

Don't take this the wrong way, but a "false pregancy" simply means that THE DOG IS NOT PREGNANT. I've heard breeders apologize to people who have put down deposits on pups, to later say, "I'm sorry...My bitch was going through a false pregnancy.." Translated, that means, "I didn't have my bitch vet-checked, and I didn't want to spend the $ to have her sonogrammed." In my opinion, a false pregnancy means the breeder thought she was pregnant, and she never was............ That's it................

The medical term for this phenomenon is called Pseudocyesis. See if you can follow or open this hyperlink: http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/openurl?genre=article&sid=nlm:pubmed&issn=0936-6768&date=2001&volume=36&issue=6&spage=283

or she could have been pregnate and started showing all the signs and then absorbed the litter. Heather

I know people say that false pregnancies are not real but I have a bitch who has just had her second false preganancy. She comes into season, gets mated and then nine weeks later developes milk and starts nesting etc - all the symptoms without any puppies. She has never had a litter, just these two false pregnancies. It is quite upsetting to watch her going through all the signs because it is obviously distressing for her. I am thinking of having her spayed to avoid any future problems, but she is such a good bitch, well constructed and a lovely temperament, I really wanted her to have a litter. Anyone got any thoughts?
