I think all men showing in IPO today should be required to wear knickers, sport coats, white shirts and ties.

matthew, you say poe-tay-toe, I say poe-tay-toe, but with a Southern New Jersey accent. No SchH or other accepted working title = not eligible for breed survey. No breed survey, OTOH, ≠ not eligible for a SchH or other accepted working title. Neither evaluation tool is of greater importance than the other, however.
So it would seem that we are in agreement after all, n'est ce pas?suitableness
noun. qualification
- suitability ---------------------> the word I chose to use
- what it takes
- worthiness -------------------> the word you chose to use

It would have horrified me had you said you were not aware of what it is and was--perhaps you have heard of the term, 'conversational reminiscence', a method of entry into a conversation? joanro, I too await susie's input...unless she's going to sully my image of training clubs that have lovely Biergärten and Küchen, in which case I'll beg her to open her post with the short phrase, 'Spoiler Alert', allowing me to skip right past the part I don't wish to hear. [will cover ears with hands, sing la-la-lal-la]

Hexe,
Agree to disagree

Sorry for the late response, have been on vacation in Austria, just reading through all the threads...
No la-la-la necessary, Hexe.- beer AFTER training still is part of club-life, time for tell tales and memories, most often a lot of fun...

I remember Steve Leigh's often hilarious account of training in Germany. And yes, beer....LOTS of beer....was involved, but only AFTER training!
The dogs are housed at the club (IIRC, this was during the '70s or '80s) and not at home, but of course the video above shows a much earlier time.
That black dog that shows up around 3:54 in the video is HUGE! Just look at where his back is in relation to his handler's legs... Guess they had oversized dogs back then, too!

Sun, in the "big" clubs still is a lot of training ( up to 6 times the week / shows, trials on Sunday, otherwise it´s not possible to title that fast, showtraining at least once the week at the club and a lot of training at home ), the dogs (normally) are not housed at the clubs any more, it´s not only beer, but food, too, the active members spend a lot of time in the clubs, and the clubs make their money with it.
Oversized dogs existed to any times, and a lot of week dogs, too. In the "early times" handlers trained different, a dog without working abilities wasn´t developed, but given away or worse ( that said, a dog that was able to "survive" the training was a "hard" dog at least ). A lot of genetically sick dogs - they "vanished" at some point ( too late, a lot of them were used for breeding - medicine made substancial progress since the beginning of the breed ).
Edited to add : Hundreds of pictures, Hundmutter, but that´s for the "off topic" section....
