    Description

Crowe's Nest Kennel is a small, private, Russell Terrier breeding and show kennel located in central North Carolina about 35 miles west of Raleigh.  Typically producing only one or two litters a year, we concentrate on quality, not quantity.

Owner and operator, Terry Crowe-White, has been actively involved in the sport of showing dogs for most of her 60+ years, and has been an avid Russell Terrier fancier since the late 1980's having acquired her first in 1986.  She spent several years watching and learning about the breed before beginning her kennel in 2001.

Terry is a member of the AKC's National Parent Club for the breed, the American Russell Terrier Club, and is a member of it's Specialty Show Committee and its Genetic Diversity Project Committee.  She has also written for the Club's newsletter, and represented the Club at the AKC's Responsible Dog Ownership Day / Meet The Breeds at Raleigh, NC.

Crowe's Nest dogs are owner-handled and have been quite successful in the AKC show ring.  Terry's father was a popular and well-respected AKC licensed professional all-breed handler when she was growing up, and she learned a great deal from him about grooming and presentation, which seems to be serving her well.  Beginning in January of 2010 she came back to the world of AKC shows, the Russell Terrier's first year of eligibility to compete in the Miscellaneous "Group" at recognized shows.  AKC has also created a new title for Miscellaneous Breeds, the Certificate of Merit (CM).  Comparable to the Champion title conferred on "fully" recognized breeds, 15 points are required to qualify, and points are award only to Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex winners - there is no "Winners" class in Miscellaneous Competition.

In limited showing, several Crowe's Nest dogs have earned AKC points, and UKC Ch. Elk Creek Beamer (co-owned with JoAnn Stoll and Billie M. Sumrell) has topped the list with multiple BOB, BOS and Best In Miscellaneous Classes wins for a total of 8 points as of April 2010.

Crowe's Nest dogs are consistent in quality, type, size and temperament.  On average maturing at a quite spannable 11 inches tall, they have quite affable dispositions, are calm, and laid-back in nature, and display a remarkable talent for hunting.  "ARTC is on a mission to preserve every aspect of this wonderful little breed," says Terry, "that's why I became a member; we strongly encourage our members to hunt heir dogs, participate in Earth Dog and Agility competitions as well as 'Bench' shows and Field events.  My goal as a breeder is produce sound minds in sound bodies, and as many multi-titled dogs as possible.  If we're all on the same page, the breed will benefit in every way.  That old saw about Kennel Club recognition ruins a breed is simply not true - people who shouldn't be breeders ruin breeds."
