How to check on background of Trainer(s), any abuse, type of training, experience, their expertise, etc. Can't find history/background on a particular person.

Ask for a list of references, and check out at least a couple of random choices. If the person is not willing to provide a list of references, then that is a red flag to me. Also check for business licence (if applicable) with the city/ town, and BBB. Is the trainer pressuring you to leave your dog with them for board/train? If so, that should tell you something, vs a trainer who wants you to participate in the training of your dog. Last of all, go with your gut feelings.

If in the US some states have court records available online for free, wouldn't hurt to check out and see if they have a criminal record.

Nan, in addition to all suggested above, does this Trainer have their own website ? If so you may be able to find both a testamonials section of that; AND some other reviews, to compare, on the various consumer Review sites (+ BBB already mentioned.) And did you get their name from a local Club, if so worth asking other members if they have had dealings with this particular Trainer and what they thought of them.
