I've been looking for a reputable breeder for the better part of a year now. I had a few finalists I was interested in, but I keep reading horrible stories from ripoffreport and other sites about folks who picked out a dog, paid and did not get what they paid for(sick, etc...), or if they got the dog at all.

There is a breeder in my state(Maine) called Timber Ridge Shepherds. Does anyone have any information, good or bad on this breeder? Any other breeders you would recommend in the New England area?

Thanks

Terp

New England has a number of reputable German Shepherd breeders if that is where you are located. Unfortunately I am up to my eyeballs in alligators right now and for the next 3 -4 days but will try to check back and post something or pm. It would be helpful if you post/pm what you are looking for in a shepherd - companion, working dog, sport dog- define what sport(s), breed showing ( USCA, AKC, UK) etc. Tell us if you have owned a GSD and if so what kind, what you did with the dog etc. More info you give us the better we can help.

Meanwhile I would suggest going to the USCA ( United Schutzhund Clubs of America) and look up training clubs in your area. Forget the web. Go to training sessions, breed shows working trial. Find the dogs you like - talk to their owners and breeders etc.

If your cup of tea is AKC - same advice go to all breed shows, specialty shows (GSDs only, obedience, agility, herding , tracking etc etc events.

Do not be surprised if a good breeder tells you they only breed occasionally (less than 1x a year) or that there is a waiting list for their pups.

Hope this gets you started. Good luck. Have fun.

I know Doreen personally. She's as reputable as a breeder as they come

As a rule of thumb...When you're inexperienced in picking out a puppy or even a young dog...Find someone that you trust and ask for their help in choosing a breeder and/or a puppy/dog...
To find someone with experience might be easier then you think...If you're wanting a Working dog then go to some Working Dog Clubs like Schutzhund and talk to people and ask...The same goes for Showlines...Go to your local AKC Show Clubs and talk to people and find someone that would be willing to help and that you like and can trust...
Don't be in a hurry and learn what you really want and what really fits in your life and goals...

Absolutely what Bob says; getting experienced help will also teach you what you need to know from breeders, which proofs of health tests to seek, what signs of a poor breeder to look out for, and more. People who stumble blindly in alone are twice as likely to get rooked by the less honest breeders than someone who has a good idea of what would be a healthy well-bred litter, and a good pup for their lifestyle. Not to say there are no good and honest breeders out there, but it helps if you can recognise - and say No - to those who do not measure up.
