How long did it take you all to get a title on your dog in IPO? More specifically a Bh and IPO 1.

I have a 16 month old dog that I've had for 2 months now. Of course not expecting a title overnight, I just don't know what type of timeline I should have in mind. I know it will vary for the handler and dog's abilities.

TIA! Wink Smile

hntrjmpr434 assuming all the instincts and ablities are in place with dog and handler and trainer

To JUST PASS BH not more than 12 weeks during this time also working on IPO so now add 6 months. Your dog can learn the routine in this time and pass.

The dog is not solid and not ready for much if any pressure. I do like to get the 1 out of the way if that is as far as I am going then continue to work to make them solid. If I am going for the 2 and 3 then slow down and make sure the 2 is very solid that could be 8 more months but then you should be able to get the 3 in a very short time after the 2.

Don't rush it. Make sure it is correct from the beginning. Sch 2 and 3 are easier to obtain than the Sch 1. Sch 1 is the training of everything. I have seen dogs get a Bh on a Saturday and the Sch 1 on Sunday. I have seen a dog get the Sch 2 on Saturday and Sch 3 on Sunday.

Hi hntrjmpr434,

The time it takes depends a lot on the time you put into training, how "perfect" you want your routine, and your support group.

I'm of the philosophy that just making the grade isn't good enough. Because of that and the time I spend training (not as much as I would like) my dogs passed their BH at 18 months and 24 months. I am still working on the IPO1 with my female who will be three this spring. I'm training her to be ready for the IPO3 before we go for the 1. Also, depends on your dogs mental maturity. Some dogs, mostly males, mature (mentally) slower than others and will not do as well in bite work until they are more mature.

Take your time building a correct founation, you'll be so much happier with the results Teeth Smile.

Timeline for IPO1, IPO2, IPO3 and the breed survey is to 9 months with any dog. I just checked the Gunbil site and that's their timeline. You can read on their site that they are experts at training dogs for these titles. 6 to 9 months for all three titles should be enough time if you are a good trainer.

the best advice I received was to train for the IPO1 and when ready, go look for a trial to do the Bh. It is better than saying club X-Y-Z has a trial in 7 weeks and I will make my dog's training be ready for Bh or IPO1. I make a list of skills/exercises and compare my dogs training to that list. for example; Long Down, can my dog ignore and remain in place for another dog's heeling pattern? Recalls? Retrieves? No Retrieves or gun fire in the Bh but if my dog can handle that kind of distraction and challange in every exercise I will send in my entry.

@hntrjmpr434 - Are you looking to make points or earn a title? There are a lot of people i train with who will not step onto the trial field for their BH until their dog is ready for their IPOIII, these are people who are training for points, have real goals of High SG or V in each phase. Then there are those who state they just want to earn titles now and worry about points after their initial IPO III. I wonder if Gunbil can get a dog titled BH - IPOIII in 9 months under a FCI judge with their standard of "...a dog may show no signs of pressure..." Last year Kroyer lost a ton of points in Phase B for that...BTW Dave is not known for heavy handed training, this video is not a result of Dave's training methods.

My previous IPO dogs were between 1.5-2 years when they did their BHs. Then titles following that. My very first IPO dog I waited too long to title after the BH, should have done it much sooner, he was ready for a 1, possibly 2 before we even did the BH (20 months) but other stuff not related to dog/dogsport got in the way for a while. It really depends on you, your dog, how you train, how your club likes to progress. I've seen people do a BH with a 3 year old dog and then earn the IPO titles in 1-2 year intervals beyond that, and I know someone who did BH-IPO3 in 3 months once the dog was trained up and went on to nationals. No right or wrong way. In some areas trials are much harder to come by and involve travel so unfortunately for me it was never possible to just train for an IPO1 (or IPO3 goal) and do the BH whenever I got to that point, it did involve selecting a specific trial/date that may not have been optimal for training. My last IPO dog was ready for his BH but was one week too young to participate in the trial the rest of my club did which was end of Nov. right before winter hit, so he had to wait until spring because of the winter and there being no trials.
