Hi All

I am owning my second GSD but forst working line. I want to ensure that my current pup ( a female ) grows correctly.  I would like to know from the experts on here if she may be currently overweight?    She is  1 week from being 4 months old,  stands 15.5 inches at the withers, but weigh 40 lbs.  She is large boned but  does not appear to be fat ( by feel or looking at her ). She eats Origen ( large breed puppy  dry kibble ) twice a day ( shes is not willing to eat more thaan two times in a day ). Each day she gets about an  45 minutes to an hour exercise  ( mostly walking the perimeter of a park ) , and some drive building exercises with a soft tug.  Can anyone tell if a puppy this young should be 40 lbs in body weight? Thje breeder mentioned that her mother is about 75 lbs, and her father  95-100 lbs.

Thanks for the responses.

My pup just turned 4 months, and I had her weighed at the vet. I was curious to see how her weght compared to the average for this age. (She's 30 lbs.)

The average weight for a 4 month GSD female is 36 lbs., so I'd say your female is just about where she should be, if she's large boned!

I think it's a very difficult job to say this dog or that dog should be this or that weight...I think the best you can do is to look at your puppy/dog and see if they look good...Not being over weight...so on...

The best predictor of what a puppy should be is to know what the parents were that that age...Then you have something to gauge it by...

I only worry about puppy's weight at birth and for the first few weeks...If they're eating well then I let nature take it's course...In nature dogs are not fat or overweight...So take a good...honest look at your puppy/dog and feed accordingly...

I'm curious as to why you prefix the dog as working Line?....does that affect the weight in any way? Just curious?
