I'm going to help k9rule here and second the question...any good advice about getting the dog to stop chewing on the dumbbell?

My dog either likes to chew it or just spit it out.

you have to make the dog stop seeing the dumbell as a reward, but start to see it as a way to get the reward

Duke1965 is right. Helps to go back to the beginning and review each step, actually shorter in the long run and less frustration and stress on you and the dog. Good resources:

Micheal Ellis' DVD Training the Retrieve  DVD or streaming video

If you are open to clicker training, Lana Mitchell's The Clicked Retreiver paperback or Kindle

There are too many questions and variables here to simply answer this. Temperament of dog, how was it trained to do this, does it chew it when, close to the handler, as the handler approaches, when the handler reaches for it, when the dog is told to release, etc. These questions need answering because without a root cause there can be no answer.

this dog was chewing as well, I  build the apport on a soft bitingroll and reward with ball, the PVC doesnot make it easyer on chewy dogs where a soft bitingroll gives them a more relaxed grip the roll is no reward, the ball is, so rewarding/playing with ball

hold of dumbell is second part of video

Different dogs need different methods , you can work with what is there naturaly or pressure, again I would teach/train with soft biteroll, reward ball/food or what he likes

more pleasant in the mouth and no linking of unpleasant situations to the wood dumbell
