It all depends on the type dogs you are hoping to produce, and what the intended purpose of them dogs are. I care "nothing" about the show world, nothing. So I cross my lines.
My goal is healthy , hearty dogs that are capable of anything put to them. I care nothing about the color, just health and temperment
If you are going for the rich red sshowline dogs, you do have your work cut out for you IF you want to produce dogs acceptable for the ring.
I take that back, you want to go beyond "acceptable" , because what has become acceptable for the showring, really shouldn't be. Your criteria is not the same for show and work, although it should be.
I am very happy to see you trying to shoot for the best. I would love to see you not jyst go with the flow, and while you have the opportunity, if you are going to breed and show these dogs, you do so with great consideration for the breed (as I see you trying...yeah)
I do not know whose advice you should follow, don't know whose right and who is wrong, but I do know WHAT is right and what is wrong.
I see too many breeders forfeit correct structure, in favor of brighter color, that is just wrong. AND, it isn't just in the showline dogs either. I recently viewed a website offering czech working dogs, and almost wanted to cry. What a shame what little regard some kennels have for the breed as a whole.
If your goal is to produce nice showline dogs, like that pup you put up, I wish you all the best in your ventures. You have the ability to make a difference, am very pleased to see you trying.

It just details a little on some old bloodlines, that more than likely you will find some of in your dogs pedigree back several generations.
You will get an idea on what was sought after in different dogs to compliment each other. There are other interesting links on their page.

A show dog should have the character and strong nerves of a GSD first and for most, since the breed was developed as a working breed and conformation shows have come later. It is possible to produce the correct "show dog" which also has the correct temperament of the GSD.....just don't make compromises or short cuts to the end goal.
