Hi,
My 1 1/2 year old male GSD male gets extremely excited when the cats are in the room. He isn't aggressive, he just wants to play with them, which they don't really like. If the cats run, he will chase them.. So far I keep him away from the cats unless I have him on a house line . Does anyone have any ideas on how to break him of this? I would like to have the dog and the cats in the same room together. My female GSD doesn't bother with the cats. They even sleep on the bed together.
Thanks,
Juno 11

You're just going to have to keep working with him to not chase after the cats. Which may be hard if he's high drive. Once your cats realize he won't bother them they most likely will quit running from him. Each time he goes after the cats, give him a correction, until he figures out that cat chasing isn't to be tolerated.

just teach him there is a right time and place for it.

Correct him before he goes after the cat, control the situation.
Before he gets excited, put him at stay in the down position, then correct him if he disobeys those commands.
I can tell you this it is a losing battle if you don't have a good obedience foundation and plenty of time and patience, even then it's a crap shoot.
You could let the cat lay in to him but anything could and probably would happen, none of which is good.
Good luck.

I agree with all of the above. When I first brought my dog home, it only took a couple of times for her to realize that is NOT acceptable. It's the cats world, we all just live in it. LOL

None of my dogs chase our cats, they ignore them, they will chase strange cats....all starts with food.... I put bowls down and let cat sniff, eat first that immediately tells dogs where they stand in the pack....also dogs are limited on house space during introduction period...if cat has free range and dog is limited it shows their place in the pack...it also helps to have a cat house in shared space so cat can watch from the top....eventually cat will have all the respect.. :)

LOL,
cats are a little further down the food chain around here.
To each his own I guess.
