Xeph

As the title says.  Please forgive his coat.  He recently dropped it all.

Hey Xeph you know I don't do critiques but I think your dog is handsome.

Thanks :)  He's doing really well in his service training.  Does everything with gusto, lol

It's taken me awhile to get used to his size (still not quite used to it, even after 7 months), but I have to say, a bonus to his small stature is that he fits on the bed :D  Ever since I got married, Strauss has opted not to sleep on the bed because he's just too big and there's not enough room, but Loch is medium sized (small compared to Moo) and can curl up in a nice little ball or stretch out in a thin sable line, lol.

Sometimes he scares the crap out of me though!  I wake up and he'll just be staring at me with his big pumpkin eyes.

Loch is mighty handsome and I bet he is mighty agile, too.

I also have a smaller female for the first time (within standard, though) and am realizing the benefits of it.

Xeph I love his size. Myself I like the smaller (within standard) more agile dogs.........Great pic of you and him and I love the bed story. I got in a new relationship back in the spring and he doesn't like dogs in the bed....maybe with a smaller one................Sad Smile

.Beautiful boy, love the conformation of him also. I love seeing German Shepherds built like a German Shepherd should be

I am not an expert but in my opinion your dog looks fine for a WL. Only thing that I would prefer to see, if this was my dog would be more muscle tone.

by hexe on 31 October 2013 - 18:10

Got to see him in the 'fur' a few weeks ago, and he is a handsome boy, and I could definitely see his paternal grandfather in him.  In regard to the muscle tone, it's coming; he was basically a kennel/couch dog until recently.  Very straight in the shoulder, but that's not unusual in the working line dogs.  He's a very taut, dry dog with a kind eye and a gentle air about him.

As for waking up and finding those eyes on you, Xeph, doesn't surprise me. Both Ash, his paternal grandsire, and Frost, Ash's dam, were 'thinking dogs', the type that would seem to muse things over in their leisure.  Both wicked-smart, too.  I still maintain that Frost is one of the most clever and intelligent dogs I've ever had the pleasure to meet, and her son was nearly her equal.  Neither of them missed much that was going on around them.

Handsome boy, I personally would like to see a bit more bone/substance to him. A little more angle to the shoulder. Nice looking head. But of course we all have our own preferences!

CMilles, I would like "more" to him as well.  I actually prefer a larger dog, but must concede that for my purposes (service work) his size has definitely made certain things easier.

For example. we had a space issue in my van on the way to the national.  I had to have a dog ride in the wheel well of the passenger side, since one of the other dogs got ill and needed a crate to herself.  Loch is small enough to fit in the wheel well.  It is just IMPOSSIBLE for Strauss to fit.  He can't even sit down properly.  He has to stand with his front half on you.

Loch very easily curled up in the wheel well and used my lap for a pillow (my friend drove).

If I ever have to fly again in the future, travel with him will also be much easier than it was with Strauss.  Strauss was able to mash himself into the bulkhead of the planes we flew in, but it was not easy or comfortable for him.  Loch would have no problem doing the same.

He does need more angle to his shoulder.  He is not the best mover for sure.  Very agile and quick at the gallop (greased lightning), but he's not very efficient at the trot (IMO).

In terms of muscle tone, he is a bit better than he was.  I do play ball with him and what not, but I will concede that unless I am able to do agility with him, he will never be in rock hard condition.  I just do not have the physical ability to do that anymore.  He'll be kept in shape, of course, but this isn't a competition animal.  I would like more tone, and certainly would never let him just waste away to nothing, but there are compromises that must be made :)

The good news is the muscle he does have is nice and hard, just not bulky.  And as hexe said, a very dry dog.

He's very smart, eager to learn, very biddable, though a bit handler soft for my taste.  He's a cool dude, though, and doing really well here.
