Hi,

I was wondering about mistakes handlers often make when they either competing or training? I am looking at training my first girl and would like advice to try to avoid fixing things later? I also ask to keep names out as I do not want to start arguments about anyone's ability. Please use terms like "this handler". All advice is appreciated as I am a newcomer to the sports world. Thank you in advance.

First mistake to avoid is, stop worrying about making mistakes. Go out and enjoy yourself. Even the World's best have had their share of stumbles.

Thanks Riven,

I guess I was more concerned about myself rather then my dog.

A very big mistake is thinking you know more than you do after a short time training.
Don't try to out think people who have been training for a long time.
Don't try to invent new ways of training. Somebody has most likely already tried it, and it didn't work.
Be a sponge and soak up knowledge. Then find your own way.

Definitely what Riven and OGBS have suggested.
Additionaly.......try not to be guilty of the classic "just one more time" method training.
Meaning, during training you and your dog complete an exercise really well and you want to do it "just one more time".
Often times you can undo a successful training session by doing it "one more time". I know because I've been guilty of it myself a time or two Teeth Smile.
To my knowledge there's no set rule but, I try to train multiple times a day, keeping my training sessions short (about 15 minutes each) and fun.

Also...here's a big one in my opinion....if you don't feel like training (your sick, mad or what ever)....DON'T....your dog can sense your attitude.

Have fun....that's what dog training should be about......good luck.
