count finally came out:
13,339, way down from over 30,000 in the mid 1990s
Other breeds are also seeing serious fall off, but this is big business
for the SV and the German Breeders. The SV has a paid staff of
over 100, very difficult to keep the Bureaucrats fat and happy with
falling registrations like this.

Jim,
I tried my best to get through your link of argument, but it was quite daunting to get through as it was so wordy and not getting to the point. I was kinda getting it as I scanned over most, until I got to the Dalmatian issue..."breeding Pointers to Dalmatians to get rid of deafness." This may be true, but I am not familiar with that as the reason. It was the uric acid problem. I lost some credibility in the author of your link when I read that portion. Uric acid is the reason. http://www.dalmatianheritage.com/about/schaible_research.htm

unregistered dogs, with 'pet' temperaments. £$£$£$ The Working litters bred
outside the system is 'pissing in the ocean', Jim; I wasn't having a go about those.

my attention, I will review the literature and modify my text as necessary.
But my real point is that the "purebred" is an invention of man, and hundreds of years
of selective breeding always willing to bring in outside lines has been very successful.
I am not suggesting that we need to get rid of the concept of a breed, that the German
Shepherd Dog is a perfectly valid concept. Most Doberman people know that to revive
the breed it would be necessary to incorporate outside breedings, perhaps Beaucerons,
or Rottweilers. Absolutely nothing wrong with this.
In Belgium you can take any dog in the ring in any breed, and if you get a rating of
"good" from two judges you can get provisional or pink papers. In the third generation
it converts to full papers. This should be more utilized, and should be normal in every
country. "Good" by the way is a very low rating, it basically means OK this time, but
never show me that dog again. Unfortunately, there is not a character requirement.

I found your link informative. Here is another link that you might find of interest that has some similar issues. Hybrid vigor created by out-crossing. I'm not sure I like American lines but the same concept is true with other GSD lines and still stay within the breed.
