We are soon going to have a new GSD puppie. We have experience with dogs and GSD. We have access in my area on professional trainning.
Howevver I was also looking for something to complement real life trainning witha DVD or book.
So I would like to know what you think of OBEDIENCE without conflict by
Ivan Balabanov and Leerburg dvd. On their website to me Leerburg dvd seems to target what I want: basic dog obedience, raise a puppy from 8 week to 8 months, Establishing Pack Structure
with the Family Pet....
In order hand I don't know why but to me the quality of Ivan Balabanov material(Obedience without Conflict ) seems to be very good and high quality however do they cover, puppy stage, the pack structure...???
To me it's not clear what it cover exactly. :
Obedience Without Conflict with Ivan Balabanov Video 1- Clear Communication
This video production features one of today's most prominent and successful dog sport competitors and coaches. Ivan's techniques for creating crystal clarity in communication between handler and dog are detailed. True partnership is attained when the conflict of miscommunication is broken through common language.
This beautiful production details:
• how to establish clear communication with your dog
• how to use the release command as a bridge
• the proper use of the release command, reassurance command, and reward
• the relationship between fast performance, the release, and reward
• the interaction between primary, secondary, and tertiary reinforcers
• the use of signaled non-reward
• the relationship between "passive" and "active" obedience exercises
• an introduction to "The Game"
And because these DVD aren't cheap I would like to ask advice and personnal experience before making my choice. I' m open to other idea in term of books & DVD.
Is Obedience Without Conflict with Ivan Balabanov primary odience can be familly or it's more for professional???
Thanks in advance.

what kind of experience with GSD's do you have?
What exactly are you looking for?
Personally I would not spend that kind of money on a DVD.

the power of training with markers
the power of training with food
the power of training with toys
i love these DVD's and if you want to develope a sport or competition dog they are very helpful in teaching operand(sp?) conditioning.....
plus it's a fun way to train for both me and my dogs.....

thanks Sitamom I will take a look at these video.
Moon : I just want be expose to another source of learning than local professional dog trainner. I'm not a professional but I want to learn...
The question about the what everything : it can be from general obedience, communication technique, focus, play time, dog communicatio, Pack struture around the familly.
I'm not saying that local dog trainning aren't good it's just that I think there is nothing wrong with the desire to learn more and being expose to different method, technique and knowledge.
I think pedigreedatabase is a great source of all kind of knowledge, tips & techniques. I know some can be good, some should be taken with a grain of salt but it's a forum where a lot of people around the world share a common passion. I realisize that nobody have the same opinion or idea on something.
That was just my goal.
Thanks

Most raising and training is common sense, the simpler the better.
You said you had some experience, and learning more is good.
Just remember that grain of salt.
Good luck,
Moons.

(Operand can be a math or computer term, I just learned that, myself. Or I might have have known the math term once long ago, but forgot it.)

We've got him involved in puppy classes for socialization and basic training appropriate for his age group. The instructor is also availing some extra time for us when needed.
I've always been one to affirm the positive outcomes of resourcing as much information from various sources as possible, disceminating the positives and sifting out the negatives and finally applying a combination of common sense.
We've found over the past few years that you can't always believe what you read on the interweb, watch on videos, face to face with people, etc. This was in regards to plumbing, finances, cancer, etc.
At some point you have to garner as much information as you can and make your own educated decisions. Some will work out, some won't. Others will agree with them, others won't.
Anyhoo, with regards to the Leerburg videos we just started watching them last night. I was very impressed with the information on them. Several times throughout the puppy vid, my wife and I looked at each other and went "oops, wow we've been screwing that up haven't we." We're learning. I would strongly recommend these videos.
The production budget must have been pretty low, which is kind of amusing. Spelling errors abound, his microphone must have been bought from the bargain bin at Radio Shack.
Otherwise, we're looking forward to finishing the puppy vid and moving onto the dominant dog one as this is clearly an issue we are facing.
Just my thoughts.

As usual Sita's Mom suggestions are very good even if you don't want a working pup (Balabanov is geared toward working/competition obedience)
