Articles on track - Page 1

I am working on the articles on the track, but the dog just isnt picking it up.  I have him downing on articles off the track and on the track I give him a big food reward.  My other dog seemed to pick it up quicker.  Anything else I could be doing or tips?  Does it just take forever to sink in with some dogs?

I wouldn't put them on the track until they're 100% off the track. You don't want the dog to go into avoidance at the article because of pressure on the track. Can hurt the whole track if done with too much pressure. Make it a fun thing off the track with some super special treats. And make sure he is actually indicating the article in proper position. Bad practice and training result in bad scores. Plus, you can fix it here rather than on the track.

Will you tell how you are doing it , I use planty of food right after the article and just before she finishes offer him more from my hand and lore him to go down .She does it because this is how she learned the platz then slowly  remove the body signals out. no correction at all .first done off the track incase then when she strated to go down by her self and wait for me to get more then will be done on the end of the track .From day one I will make sure she is correct on the article she gets incourage to move back or forward to have atticle in right position

I was having the same problem with my girl, she would indicate the articles off the track or even in just an article track but not on the track its self.  One of the greatest trainers I have met so far, Les Flores helped me with it and it worked.  He told me to have less food in the entire track make her track for the article and the reward she gets at the articles, and also in the begining make a small scent pad for the article, put some food in front of the article and behind the article.  The dog has to slow down when it gets to the article to eat the food in front of the article and it gives you a chance to help them by giving the command to down.  It worked fantastic for my girl, she indicates everytime now.  Now we are at the point that I only put minimal food in the track and she only gets the reward when she indicates the article.  We passed our IPO 1 this past October and she did fantastic, she saw the article and indicated it fast!
