giving dog raw pig skin? - Page 1

Today at the store I buy some raw meats at I saw pig skin, I was tempted to buy it but wanted to check to see if it was safe for my dogs to eat raw first.  Any help is appreciated.  I tried searching google but nothing came up except an article that said never feed raw pork to dogs.  Thanks!

I am not huge fan of pork for me or my dogs, but I do buy pig feet and ears (raw) for them throughout fall and winter. They love it. I been doing it for past 5-6 years and had no issues with it at all. I dont know about pig skin alone, it would also depend where are you getting t from, I get it from a local butcher and all his stuff is grass grazed, organic, etc...

  I would be very careful with pig ,my friend feed her shepherd pig resulted in pancreatius she lost her dog her vet said it was because of pig fat .

Whatever you feed raw or otherwise any dog can get pancreatitis if overfed.  What are the nutritional benefits in pig skin;  if none then NO I would not feed it to the dogs.

As a veterinary technician... we generally advise our clients that pork is a no-no.. (and no.. we are not one of those hospitals that don't like raw... we do prefer grain free & home made in many cases).

HOWEVER, that is mostly because pork is very high in fat content... and THAT is what can cause pancreatitis.. The fat content is key, and many pets suffer from pancreatitis when fed excessively fatty, greasy table scraps - which are not part of a balanced diet. 

I doubt if you give your dog occasional pork treats, or if it is an ingredient of the product of your dogs food otc food that any company would risk putting it in there if the pancreatitis from pork alone was a fact.  Though... I stay away from it.

Why not just give the raw skin a quick roasting in the oven, then serve it to the dog as a chewy treat? Skin isn't fat, after all. The heat will kill any disease causing organisms, and I would think that would be common sense. I mean really, what is the big deal if a raw fed dog happened to eat something cooked? 

I am with LadyFrost and give mine raw pig ears.  They eat it like there is no tomorrow.  I stay away from pork bones and give beef bones instead.
