I need to know the correct way to teach my 17 mos. old GSD to use a crate. He's never been in one. My friend told me I need to do this for a lot of reasons. I've left the door open and put different things in it for him to get but he seems afraid or leery of it altho he would eventually get the item. I don't want him to stay in it a lot ,only for a reason, like a repairman coming, company coming, giving him a bone, etc. He is very much a part of the family and we love him. I left the door open so he would know he didn't have to be afraid. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Peggy

In order to train your dog to go in to a crate comfortably, which all dogs should be trained to do.
Find out what motivates your dog - food, toy or praise- or compulsion
My suggestion would be to make it a fun/nice experience to start. If your dog has a favorite toy, start off by tossing the toy in the crate and having your dog retrieve it, or start placing your dogs food bowl in the kennel and have the dog eat in the kennel, or toss dog treats in the kennel so that the dog goes in and out and learns not to be afraid of the kennel.
- Do not close the door yet-
It will take some time and patience on your part to introduce the kennel to your dog, let the dog know it is a Safe Place and it belongs to them- they will feel comfortable if you introduce it to them in a positive manner.
Keep the crate training exercises limited to about 2-4 minutes each day, but do it 4-5 times a day. If you can do this Consistently......you should be able to have your dog crate trained within 1 week.
Keep in mind, that you have to spend time with your dog during these exercises, praise and encourage them to do the behavior you want. You cannot just put their food bowl/toy etc. in the crate and walk away......

i personallyfeed first solid food to pups in a small puppy crate at about 3weks of age, I carrythem aroundin crate and introduce lots of noise and commotion. Doesnt take much effort but makes a world ofdifference in real time. I continue to feed thm in crate thu maturity, never have probs with crating a dog in fact they love their crates(dens). Youhave waited too long to introduce basic training to your dog IMHO
