With gas prices on the rise again, especially the cost of diesel.

My hubby and I are thinking about buying me a Cheap (under $18K) run around town car and parking the beast (F350 long bed crew cab 4x4).

I need a car big enough to put Cisco's crate in, gets great gas mileage, has leg room, has some get up and go when needed and looks sporty.

We are looking at the Honda Fit Sport, Nissan Versa Hatchback, Kia Soul (not all that fond of the boxy look), and the Ford Focus Hatchback.

Any other suggestions? What are your likes and dislikes about your suggestion?

Thanks for the help.

I drive a big truck and so when we bought our daughter a Kia Rio, I had to drive it back to the house and was surprised that it didn't "feel" like a little car inside. She loves it and it gets great gas mileage. Originally we were looking at the Focus for her but we were able to get the Kia Rio much cheaper and they look very similar

Hi LJ and Clee,
Thanks for your replies. I looked at the Rio Cute. How does your daughter like it so far?

Chaz I had Chevy's all my life, great cars easy to work on (I did all oil, breaks, belts, etc..myself) but i wanted something that would have sunroof, steering wheel radio/cd/satellite controls, automatic/manual shift control and have a torque (hate cars that make tons of noise but no go) also I wanted to have air intake kit already in the car and have low center of gravity, low enough to the ground that I can stay on offramp at 70 without rolling it..(I rolled 3 cars and it's not pretty)...so...after test driving mustang (initially that was my choice of car until i test drove it in comparison to eclipse) mini cooper, jeep (i love jeeps but not at 16 mpg for my 106 miles a day round trip to work and back), and everything else that I can think of under 20K,  i ended up getting everything i wanted in eclipse...wish American cars would have something similar at performance and price...

LF,
Beautiful car.
I would hate to take a car like that down some of the dirt roads we have to drive down to get to SAR training.
(Forgot to mention the errand car would also serve as SAR training car)
At this point I do not crate Cisco (12 weeks old) in the backseat of my truck, and may not ever, but I like the extra room a hatch back has to offer.

Chaz,
If the American cars had better consumer ratings I would buy American first, but unfortunately we don't.
The sad truth is foreign cars are built to last and most get better gas mileage. However, I will always buy American made trucks. No other country makes them better.

LadyFrost and Chaz, I too have always has chevy and Ford but for the price and reliability, since we are 8 hours away from our daughter, the Kia was more in our price range. I drive a beautiful work horse of a truck and my husband drives a Suburban. A little costly at the pump but I LOVE my old truck
