Wow.  We just started watching the Balabanov video last night.  For beginners to puppy training and the basics, this vid seems to be catering to an audience with a much higher level of obedience thinking.  Certainly not saying it's not good or informative, it's just so far beyond where we are at that it was hard to relate to.  I think we'll put this one on hold for now and when we have secured more success with the basics and intermediate goals of training, will revisit.

Just my thoughts.

Yes, that is why posted the WAIT Leerburg is good for puppies in ob and early bite work as long as you use common sense and when his old videos say crazy things (like the puppy shaking) you don't do it just because he is saying so.  But sooner than you think, Balabanov will come into play.  Try skipping to the second DVD in the series that says "The GAME"  that is something you can do with the pup early (no rough tug though with baby teeth and none when teething).  The Game is the foundation that you can start early wheras the first DVD is very technical regarding training theory.  Just watch the game part for now and use Leerburg for young puppy obedience. There are a lot of free You tube videos for young 8 week puppy training, like sit and come, stay etc.   Some of them are pretty good and you can see just what you want and not site through 45 min of theory about operant conditioning.  But do watch the Game part of Balabanov for what you can do early with the puppy.  Ellis power of food is very good too.

Oh, and remember, keep it short and sweet and always end on success.  Don't just keep going when you get your success.

For a small puppy two or three minutes at a time is enough.  Even older dogs, 15 min is good.  Better several short sessions where the dog is happy, paying attention and motivated.

Also never train when you are stressed out or p/od about something...the dog can sense it.

Use your voice as praise.  People do not praise enough.

Make sure you understand the marker (saying good for example) and release (ok, for example) that means the excercise is done and reward is coming.  In a tiny pup good and ok and reward will follow one after the other. Only later when you want the dog to hold the sit or down will there be a gap between the behavior, marked by good and the release marked by ok (so they can then get up).  Still important to use a marker word and release word right away.

This is kind of a good one minute video showing how to use food in your hand to teach:
