Using compulsion on retrieves can ruin natural drive. Sometimes all a dog needs for incentive are two toys Like Slamdunc said (instantaneous reward, he brings one back, the other gets thrown), or the owner ceasing to be interested in the game when the dog fails to bring the ball back. Packing up and walking off the field without theatrics is a wonderful way to suddenly get a dog's attention. He learns the game ends if he doesn't play by the rules. A long line can also help, IF the dog is encouraged to return, and the long line is used as a check cord. Hauling him in, against his will, like a hooked fish will not motivate him to return voluntarily. If the long line is used as compulsion, in my observation, when the dog is not on the line, he'll balk, or do whatever he wants. Let us know how it goes :)
