Rescued a mal - Page 1

She has good drive and likes to tug after working with her a few days on it. She acts like a malinois and prances around the yard just like my female mal does. Found her roaming country roads with severe mange and very hungry. The mange turned out not to be contagious so I have been socializing her with other dogs. Does she look all mal to you guys or mixed? 

It is uncommon to see a mal in my area as it is a small town in TX so I was really surprised. Took her to the vet and got medicene for her mange, got all her shots, and had her scanned for a chip with no luck so we went ahead and chipped her as well.

Looks like a mix to me, but that for sure does not matter.
She is lucky to have found a new home that is taking great care of her.

Mal front feet and ear tips/shape .. depends on her age .. if she pleases you that is enough. She will get lighter colored with age so best guess is a Mal. While Mals are rare I'm not sure that Mal/GSD crosses are any less rare. Mals are normally bred to Mals in the USA and GSD to GSD .. not much mixing of Mals and GSD in the USA as far as I can tell .. much more common in Europe for KNPV.

Thanks for the replies! All I know is this Lil girl has a ton of drive and should do well in a dog sport. She is approximately 7-9 months said the vet. I have a potential working home for her but if it doesn't work out she will stay with me until I find one for her.

Mals for sure are not a rarity anymore, and I see Mal/GSD crosses often. GSD/Mal crosses in KNPV are not common. Early on in the program, yes, but don't see it much now.

According to KNPV rules your dog is a Mal because she looks like a Malinois .. KNPV has no breed distinction or requirement based on bloodlines or pedigree.  Put another way a KNPV dog without an FCI pedigree is a mixed breed.

In KNPV a dog is whatever you say it is based on appearance .. "The difference with the unregistered Dutch Shepherds found in the KNPV program is that they have a strong influence of Malinois blood in them. Without the restriction of official registration or pedigree, the definition of whether a dog is a Malinois or a Dutch Shepherd, primarily comes down to appearance. When a Malinois is bred to a Dutch Shepherd some of the pups will be born with a Fawn coat and will be known as a Malinois, while others will be born with a brindle coat and will be known as a Dutch Shepherd. One legendry KNPV Dutch Shepherd was Arras Pegge. While Arras had a Dutch Shepherd for a mother his father was a Malinois. This simple classification process has allowed the unregistered Dutch Shepherd (and unregistered Malinois for that matter) to develop and maintain a large gene pool for breeding. Although the unregistered Dutch Shepherd can carry a good deal of Malinois blood, people often comment that they still maintain the often desirable traits of the Dutch Shepherd, that is, a highly driven, sometimes stubborn dog with more calmness than a Malinois. They are also often described as "a Malinois with an off switch!"

Mal mixes are not common in the USA for IPO or MondioRing and I have never seen a Mal mix at the FCI IPO world championships.  KNPV uses a lot of mixed breedings with Mals, Dutch Shepherds and GSD as well as some purebred dogs.  KNPV is all breed sport ( the Dutch claim it is not a sport but a finishing school for police dogs ) and has no studbook as far as I can tell .. pic of KNPV dogs below ..
