How to refine search function and email notification? - Page 1

Pedigree Database

Too many results while searching... For example, trying to list all dogs registered by the kennel name Ben-Jo. Regardless of variations of that name typed in, on the beta page, over 500 results (noted with Search result too large, limiting to 500)  show up for any dog with the series on letters ben in any part of their name. The old forum page comes back with 794 pages of results. Is there/will there be an option for refining the search results to just the exact character string? It would be a great help.

The search function is also case sensitive and always puts dogs with non-capitalized names (which many folks do) at the end of the search string, not in alphabetical order with all the capitalized names. Makes it easy to miss dogs and add duplicates, especially for new members I think. Can that be switched off? It would also help if the search function would ignore punctuation, as it now separates those names with apostrophes, etc., into different groups in the search.

There does not seem to be the option of email notification on the beta site for individual dogs anymore. Am using that function to keep track of dogs with no pedigrees at the moment, in case other researchers fill in the sire and dam in the future. So would appreciate it if that option was available still.

Thank you for your time, the PDB is truly an invaluable resource!

Hopefully, Oli is extremely busy with work so things are a little on hold right now.

For searches try using at least two words. The database has grown quite large and a single word is often too vague to find a specific dog. Think about this also when naming an entry. Make them unique enough that they can be searched and recognized later. When a dog has only a call name, like Ben, Max or Duke, I like placing extra identification after the name, like the year of birth and then the registration code and number. When the year of birth and registration are not available then I place other identifiers, like the country, the owner's name, initials or the call names of the parents with an x between them in ( ) or []. This is going to help finding the dog in search or when connecting it as a parent as well since you can search by numbers, year of birth or name.

Here for example are two dogs called Dux with the year of birth and their registration codes and numbers to differentiate them from each other. The reality is that worldwide there are a multitude of dogs called Dux, and into the past even more.

1. Dux (2006) LOI 06/83204
2. Dux (2011) LOI 11/135013

I know you have been here a while and know what you are doing, but for newcomers, please remember to search for your dog and then it's ancestors before enring it.

There is now a "Exact search" checkbox under the search. It does exact comparison without doing anything fancy.

Ben-Jo results in 5 pages.
