I am new to this breed and looking for advice and insight. I have owned a high drive Czech GSD in the past and I have heard good and bad about Mals...similar to heasring good and bad about GSD's. Can someone summarize or blanket for me differences in character between a well bred GSD for Protection vs a good Mal for the same thing? I hear Mals cannot settle well in a house and I hear they can be basket cases....but like I said I have heard similar about high drive GSD's. I am looking at some Mals now and honeslty have no idea about pedigrees, kennels or lines and I am looking to meet someone here on line that can give me a little guidance and difrection. Please feel free to IM me if you feel like sharing some knowledge with a nerwcomer to the breed.

i would not believe anyone who gives you a blanket statement, you can take that as a blanket statement. :-)
would you make a blanket statement about americans, chinese, horses, cats....how meaningful would they in terms of an individual animal.
only ones who will give you a blanket statement are breeders that sell a certain type.

Well I was looking for a starting point. lol. I have a specific pedigree that I would like opinion on since I know ZERO about Mals but thought that would be too forward.

hope the mal folks see it. lot of gsd folk on the pdb, mals not so much.
some gsd folks might give you specific mal members to pm in case they missed the thread.
hired dog = mal???
If i knew you were not a prick i would try talk you into a gsd. if you are a prick get a mal.
good luck.

The most general comparison that I can say, is that Mal's are generally a lot leaner, qiucker and more agile. Kinda like a 2 year old with super powers that never grew up.
They also REALLY like to play GAMES. Mind Games, prepare to take over the world like. set boundaries.
At the same time they ARE VERY NEEDY. Constant Attention Needed. But after 3 years or so a bit less.........
They can be more high strung at first but can mostly be trained out of being high strung with alot of socialization. I would start with tug and mostly ball games early on

If you are looking for a work dog, one that can go all day, one that will never give up, there are a couple of places to look at.
If you have an outside kennel, a lot of time to spend training and dealing with a dog, if you want to compete and do well, i can offer suggestions in a PM.
VK4, I did not catch the prick part...

what's with ppd comment???
I sure seen some mals i wouldn't want to go cqc with.
is it the lighter frame on some lines makes you say that?

I feel the same way about Malinois and IPO, what a waste of a dog.
