In 2013 many different brands of commercial dog and cat food and treats were recalled; few brands, if any, are totally free of recalls.  If you want to be sure the food you are feeding never gets a recall, you'll have to make it yourself from 100% unadulterated ingredients. You can sign on to the Dog Food Advisor site if you want to be notified of recalls as they happen. Never discard an empty dog food bag; it contains all the information you will need if the brand you are feeding is recalled.

yes most brands have their own recalls.  Best to test or try each new purchased bag before feeding.  But how?

I have fed it for years. It's done good for me and compares to the more expensive brands in my opinion. It's good food. I have had no problems and recommend it to everyone. I wish Costco would put coupons for it in there add. We renew our membership every year mostly just for this dog food.

I had been feeding my crew Kirkland's Natures Domain - knock off of Taste of the Wild. This summer I noticed a difference with a new batch of pups. I checked www.dogfoodadvior.com and discovered that the ratings of both foods had been lowered. Kirkland (Diamond) ND went from 4 to 3.5 stars and Diamond TOTW went from 5 to 4 stars except for Bison and Fowl varieties.  Diamond Naturals meat and rice formulas which is similar to Kirkland meat and rice. But I am expecting both of these to be downgraded too - they are 4 stars and the Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete is 5 stars. My local feed store sells it for the same as Costco's version and they are 5 minutes around the corner and they load it in the car for me. I am still feeding TOTW Bison and Fowl formulas in my rotation and especially to my growing pups. I recently have been trying Victor non grain formulas which are cheaper than TOTW. I live in Texas and was not affected by the Diamond recall. But if you research, just about all of the dog food companies have had some sort of recall. I think that the point is to be diligent. www.dogfoodadvisor.com  keeps up with recalls.

Kirkland's Cuts n Gravy canned dogfood has a 5 star rating and is priced very nicely.

If rice is bad, why is it recommended so much for dogs with stomach issues, and in so many homemade diets? What is something that could be used in place of it?

I had my dogs, two german shepherds and a sheltie on this food and I found there stool to be like soft serve ice cream and or worse, there coats where not the best either. I had them on it for a year and a half as I was told to give them time to addjust. Well no that didnt happen. I took them off it, and have started making my own food and only using litter dry kibble. The thing is you need to find a dog that works for your dog, what works for others may not work for yours. I did have other friends that noticed the same with there dogs too. Rice is ok for dogs its in all my books and encycalpidias and vet recomanded, the best ones for dogs are brown and wild rice.
