He just hit 5 months, is at 47lbs. I don't think I can make him tired, haha. He came from Oak Tree Kennels in OK. I think its his dad that is from Mason Kennels. His grandpa or great grandpa is a Euro import. Anyways, how does that work? Whats a fair price? I of course realzie people want to see him and all that but if this is something that is serious I won't netuer him, at least not for a long time. I am waiting a year to neuter even if he doesn't make the "cut"

You have an awful long wait to determine IF your puppy is of breeding quality and to determine if he is healthy enough to breed. You cannot do OFA on hips and elbows until he is 2 yrs old. So until then you have time to train him in obedience - protection - tracking and so forth to see if he has the ability to be a working dog which a Malinois is intended to be. Unless you are willing to put the time and money into him neuter him and enjoy him but keep him busy or you will have problems.

OH GOD....not again. Title your dog to a Sch III or now, IPO 3. Hips and elbows good or better and do a breed survey and then ask again.

Your dog is only 5 months. You have a LONG way to go. Think hips and elbows and titles and conformation of the dog, does the dog fit into the GSD standard and exceed what is expected of him? You're not going to know anything until the dog reaches about 2, when he is about where he will be growth-wise, and you can survey his hips and elbows, and title him in something. If someone is wanting to breed your dog now, chances are they're either in the OMG this is the cutest puppy ever phase. Wait until the boy turns into a man before you think about breeding him. There's a lot of things to consider, not just how good looking the dog is, or where and who he comes from.

Macrowe1, it's a Malinois, not a GSD. Judy P, you can get pre-lims from OFA as early as 6 months.
BM1, there is no way of knowing at this age if your puppy will ever be good enough to breed, and even if it is you almost never get people wanting to breed to males that aren't their own unless the dog is titled, has all the health clearances, and still you will maybe get 1 or 2 people a year wanting to breed. You got some very good advice above even though some of it wasn't completely on the spot. You will do well to find a good dog sport club near you, either Schutzhund or PSA or one of the ring sports, or even a good obedience club or agility club. Let your pup grow up some and get some training on it. at 2 Yr's old get the Hips and Elbows OFA certified, get the dog DM tested, and the eye's CERF examined. If by then your pup has titles, and passes all of its testing then at that time you can start to advertise your pup at stud. In the begining you may get $500 for a stud fee.
After reading all of this you're going, WHOA there's a lot involved, yes, there sure is. When you breed dogs the right and responsible way you do not make money, if you're lucky you break even. I hope that gives you some things to think about.

^^ THIS
Not to mention right now a titled male Mal is a dime a dozen in this country. There are LOTS of them. So he better have a heck of a lot more to offer than that. And looking at the Oak Tree dogs, there are no titles listed in either the parents or grandparents.

Thanks. I know it is way to early now. Just trying to decide if it is something I want to do. I almost would use it as a reason to not neuter him. I would rather not as I don't think I should modify animals to try to make them better. Netuered dogs never looks quite as good and get fat easily. I am a full time student so I would not really be doing this to try to get rich quick or anything. Here is the website. I am no expert but they seem to have a nice pedigree chart. Thanks again.

So now you want people to come to you to breed to your Oak Tree Kennel male. People who have females want the best stud for their girls. They want to know that he is going to produce healthy pups. They want to see GENERATIONS of hip scores and health clearances behind him. So that is for the RESPONSIBLE pet breeders who offer health guarantees on their pups (at least 24 months on hips). The other breeders want to see physical and mental abilities for their particular venue. For show breeders, they want to see GENERATIONS of AKC conformation titles with maybe AKC obedience, agility, herding titles plus the same health information. For working dog breeders, along with health information, they want to see GENERATIONS of titles in Schutzhund, French Ring, Mondio Ring, PSA, and/or police dog certification/years of service, etc. They want to see the dog work in training and in trial or in the field, and they want to talk to trainers, decoys who can vouch for the dog. Breeders want a high probability that your Oak Tree Kennel stud will produce healthy pups that will be successful. And if the pups are duds, your boy is going to get a bad reputation.
So that is how it works.
PS. You don't have to neuter your dog if you don't breed him. Just be responsible and properly contained. And respect folks with females in heat and keep your boy from getting into trouble.

I want to add, even if you have a good male and it is titled, he has to have been seen around the country. He needs exposure and/or advertising. And then his bloodlines have to be ones that are in demand. And it would help if his littermates are good and they are also known. It would help if they are good producers, etc, etc, etc.
And I want to just say this - Oak Tree is breeding pets. There are not enough homes for pet quality pups from working quality litters as it is. There are barely enough homes for sport pups. So please don't add to the number of mals that end up in shelters.

I am not looking for anything or have anything set in stone. I was just curious about how breeding works in case somethign happens in the future. Not looking to get rich quick or be a bad animal owner. I have acutally wrote my State Senator about reptile ownership and laws that should be made. I was just curious in case somebody was looking for "new blood" sort to speak........
