New Owner Mal - Page 1

We have a 10month old female Mal that we have had since it was 8weeks. She came from one of our local police officers. I also have a 8oa Boston Terrior male. The Mal just seems to dominate over the boston terrior. I put them out on the deck together and all the Mal wants to do is chew at the Boston's neck. Playing it is but the Boston does not like it. I have tried using shock collar but not having any luck. We cant sit at the deck and watch 24/7   Any ideas or tips would be great. I got this dog so I can eventually train for protection.

i am by no means a professional trainer but two ideas you could try...
Bitter Apple, spray this on your bostons neck when your mal is being mouthy, tastes terrible.
or Try Startle Distraction, this is what we use at the doggie daycare i work at (that often has 70+ dogs playing together) We use a plastic drink bottle with a choke chain inside and will shake it or toss it towards (not at!) when the dog is doing an unwanted behavior. It will give them a startle and is usually enough to snap them out of the behavior. Keep up with it and it should help!

   Why don't you start to train your mal what is exceptable behavior not to early to start training
believe me my 4 mals all live in harmony even with a yorkie of my moms they know whats allowed.

Your Mal needs to learn to leave your other dog alone. Either crate and rotate or correct the undesired behavior. Not fair to your older dog to get mauled, it looks to you to protect it. If the e collar didn't work you may not have timing or settings right. Either way of correcting should happen just as soon as your Mal is starting to LOOK at your other dog.

Any Idea on where to start. It really is hard. She listens on the basic comands: Sit,Stay,Down,OK,Here/Come but when i get the 2 out on the deck together she always trys to bite(play) at the botsons neck and he does not want to have anything to do with her. What training tips can I try for that type of behavior

We do crate her, but like i said i dont want her to always be in crate. We do also swap them out.

You can add the leave it command to her training. It is a nice command to have for situations such as yours and for when a dog is trying to get at something that could be harmful to them or you don't want them to get to. You can also try averting her attention to something else when her behavior is not desired...something that will be of more interest to your pup than your boston also training sessions are a good distraction along with exercise. It has been my experience with dogs i have owned over the years that mental stimulation wears a dog out more than the physical. With my mali if we go for a run and come home it is usually not enough to tucker her out but going for a run and doing some basic training tends to help mellow her out. This is just something that i have had success with in the past and presently.
