For those of you who want to cut down on handler errors and not cost your "dog" the points, count the "handler" errors in this video.

I count 22

why be so negative? me and everybody else will take all the points we can get

by Mal07 on 24 February 2011 - 02:02

Well just a wild guess that it was a club trial not nationals or worlds. Everyone knows what a local sch club trial means. I don't think it is the handlers fault as much as the judge that passed them.

First Schutzhund III for both of us. I know that there were mistakes most my fault. Thanks for watching the VID though and the ad it would be nice to have some constructive criticism if you have that in you. Let me know where the mistakes were at and I will be sure to fix them. It was a local club trial and we weren't quite as ready as we should have been, it wasn't my club and I am a fairly new handler. It is nice to know that most points faulted were my fault and not the dogs. Please list the 22 errors or send me a vid of one of your OB routines and I will be sure to watch and learn all I can if there is anything to learn at all.

P.S. Sorry if my previous post where I called you a "persnickety prick" hurt your ego.

Was I not offering help?  What was negative about my question?  I'm offering assistance to someone who is obviously a beginner.  Do you realize where the errors were and how to set yourself up for trial success?

First, be prepared before you walk on the field, ie empty your pockets (leave your keys somewhere else) and take the sunglasses off of your head.  Your dog almost hit the ground when you threw your keys off the field.  Your buildups for all of your changes of speed were incorrect.  10-15 paces.  Do you know the 3 second, 5 second rule?  Your buildup for the running stand was wrong, it begins from basic position right into a run, not walking like the running platz.  While continuing your running paces from the stand, you are not allowed to turn your head to check on the dog.  You grabbed the SchHI dumbbell for your flat retrieve instead of the SchHIII.  This is also where the 3 second, 5 second rule comes in.  You should not be sending your dog for the retrieve when your arms are still swinging.  Your setup for the long down was also incorrect.  The dog must hold the sit while you wait for the judge's signal (3 seconds) and then you down the dog and then you wait for the judge's one more time before leaving.  You left as the dog was downing.  These were just the things I remember without having to go back and watch again.  The running stand buildup and wrong dumbbell retrieve would cause those exercises to be unsatisfactory.  The dog performed the exercises relatively well with small exceptions, a little forging on your first healing pass and some wide about turns but most deductions were yours.

Oh, one more thing, you forgot to perform a "left turn" before you entered the group.  You must execute a "left turn" and not an angle or sweeping left circle.  Do you and your club members watch each others obedience and critique each other?

P.S.  Nothing you can say can hurt my ego.

Thanks for all the input!!! These are all the things that my training director pointed out when I showed him the video, he was not able to attend due to the fact that he was doing a seminar for a new club in South Dakota, but that is beside the point. Like I said it was my first Schutzhund 3 and only my third trial, wife did the BH. I am working on all of these things in preparation for the upcoming Western KG regional trial DVG.

I really got docked a lot of points for all these mistakes I made, which is disappointing because Red seems to be able to take everything in stride and perform well. It is not fun to loose so many points in an OB routine due to inexperience, and that is something that I am really working on resolving, I have been doing a trial run by myself (NO DOG) once a week to familiarize myself and take input from club members. I learn something new every time I step out on the training field, and I don't think that will ever stop.

Also the Judge listed all the mistakes I made and where the point deductions came from when the trial was complete. Believe it or not if I had performed better we would have scored in the mid 90's and we ended up with an 81.

I think that nerves played a big part in my mistakes and of course inexperience. But I pride myself to treat my dogs fair and learn from all my mistakes, and work on the little parts to make the whole more complete.

About Red almost hitting the ground when I tossed my keys off the field, I accidentally hit her in the mouth and cut her lip open with a key I think, seen blood and felt like SH**!!

Again I appreciate the help, that is why I am on this site to learn from others and help where I can. I will be sure to post our next OB routine with hopes that all my issues will be fixed and Red will actually freeze for her stand.

Vincent congratulations on your Sch 3.  Red is a super dog and that is why we chose to breed her with Dylan.  I do not do Sch so I can't really comment on any errors that you made in the routine, but I commend you for the effort and securing the title.  Keep up the good work...Tim

I don't think I would take advice from any of these people.

by Duderino on 03 March 2011 - 05:03

Been waiting for the explanation that you'd think would go with Spencer's profound interjection but alas, nothing.  C'mon Spencer, enlighten me, gimme somethin', throw me a bone.
