Hi everyone. My husband and I just adopted a Belgian Malinois a few days ago from our local Animal Shelter. She's purebred, but didn't have a great previous home life. I believe the owner just couldn't take care of the dogs they had. We are still getting acquainted with her. She's malnourished, extremly thin... but very eager to please. She runs with me daily and has ton of energy, so she isn't putting on any weight. Any advice on how to get her to pack on the lbs?

I'd be careful about feeding raw milk to a canine. And Sausage Gravy with burger over rice? Where are you taking your Mal,? Denny's?
First and foremost, take your dog to your Vet. Sounds like the possibility of parasites, such as intestinal or stomach worms.
Especially if this was an outdoor dog. Check to see if the dog yaks either white or yellow bile or has totally liquid stool. This is a sign of possible allergic reaction to some foods.
Some possible foods you can use are boiled chicken or turkey (chopped up) white or brown rice, Boiled pasta (Not spaghetti) There are commercial supplemnts or mix can with dry depending on your Vets reccomendations. Good Luck

Thanks everyone for the tips! We've taken her to the vet a couple of times, as they are worried about her weight. She's passed every test with flying colors... but still isn't putting on weight. The doc believes shes stressed, being that she came from such a bad home to the shelter, and now to our home. The previous owners just didn't feed her for a while... so her body destroyed whatever fat... and some of her muscles. But she's so active she can't put on weight. We'll try the pasta and rice and chicken. Maybe that will help!

What are you feeding her right now, and how much?

There are things you can add to her food for weight gain, but the answer may also just be a change in food or an increase in amount.

Right now we are feeding her Science Diet- Adult Advanced fitness (dry) and alternating with some wet Lamb Meal & Rice Science Diet.

The vet wants us to keep her bowl full, so she can eat whenever she wants... and when she gains at least 20 lbs, move her to twice a day. We took her back to the vet, and she has a respiratory infection.

We tried the chicken and brown rice, and she loved it. I suppose its a long process having her gain that much weight. She's very active, so the vet is concerned she's burning off what she's taking in. Were looking into some supplements. Any suggestions?

First I'd take her off the Science Diet.  Some foods I have had good success keeping weight on the "hard keepers" with are Taste of the Wild, Diamond's Extreme Athlete and Pro Plan Peformance (not a Purina fan, but this is the one food they make that I know many Malinois owners feed with great success).  I have also had good success with almost any decent kibble and 1-2 raw chicken quarters a day.

I would also measure how much food she's eating during the day with the free feeding, and how much she eats if you feed her meals.  Some dogs will 'graze" all day if free fed, but at the end of the day never  really eaten that much since they never are really hungry, and a mouthful or two curbs any hunger pains.  But if fed meals, they eat a lot more since they are hungry at feeding time.  I have also found that breaking the food up into a couple meals a day seems to allow some dogs to process it better, I had a dog who maintained weight on 6 cups a food a day.  But when I broke it up into 2-3 meals a day, I didn't change his daily intake at all but he started to get fat and I had to cut back on the amount I fed.  With some dogs I've also noticed just adding some warm water to the meal seems to help them maintain weight.  Not real sure why, I guess it just helped their body process it and get more nutrients from it??  These are all things I've noticed over the years, each dog is different though.

How do you get people to buy dogfood made with peanut shells, and pay
40 dollars a bag? Answer, its a science. Science diet dog food , Crap-ola.  JLP
