Can someone please explain the so-called blue gene in this breed? Is this is a recessive dilute gene expressing through the sable/agouti gene which all mals appear to have? Thanks.

Yes. But it affects all of the dog's pigment not just the sable. A blue Malinois has all it's black pigment turned blue.

Thanks. So let me check my understanding. The mal is carrying the sable homozygously and he can also carry one or both recessive dilutes. So if there were a solid gene, there could be a blue mal, as there are some rare "blue" gsds?
And I hear there IS a solid gene in this breed -- are there actually black mals?
