I have a question... For a long coated puppy to be produced, do both parents have to carry the long coated gene? Both parents have short coats.... Thanks

by Lathan on 08 October 2004 - 04:10

Yes it's in the Both line.

Both parents should be carriers of long coat gene. The fact that they have short coats doesn't mean anything.

And according to Genetics.... If both Parents are Long coated themselves... and their offspring is short coated... that offspring will never produce a long coat...

Thanks for the info.... I thought just one parent had to carry the gene...

sorry Visum, a little problem with your "theory" there... for a Longcoat to show up, it must be in both alleles. Therefore, if 2 long coated dogs were bred together, then all offspring should be longcoated as the parents only have those genes to give up. Now, for a "plush coat" which can sometimes be a dog that possesses the alleles for both stock coat and long coat, if bred to another dog with the same gene configuration for coat, you will get 3:1 ratio (3 stock/plush coats, 1 long coat) phenotypically. A "plush" with this genetic code bred to a homozygous dominant stock coat will never produce a long coat, however the offspring (1 out of every 2) would be able to produce a long coat.

Yes that would be right if the trait were associated with a single allele model but it does not appear to be that. The Coated GSD does not follow this formula, it appears that coat type is a function of multiple alleles. Further it appears that the trait is linked to a group of traits that are reflective of the original ancestral group. In breeding programs for different animals and plants when a individual with a grouping of Ancestral Traits are found they are coveted, after all the occurrence of HD in wolves is zero, how about all of the other "new" problems the current model of breeding has created. But strange in the GSD world the Coated Shepherd, which is a genetic gold mine, has been pushed to the side mostly because of politics. Has anyone actually ever seen a true long coated shepherd, where the hair is parted down the back? This is not the ancestral trait and should not be associated with what is thought of as a Coated Shepherd. So lets stick with what was decided a 100 years ago, no matter what...
