Here is one story I just came across, courtesy of the UK's National GSD Magazine:

A recent recruit to the Wales Police dog section called Max recently found a missing mother and baby. It was his first 'shift', having just completed his training. Police Constable Peter Lloyd took Max, a 2 years old German Shepherd mix, to work for his first operational day in the Dyfed-Powys counties area one Saturday morning.

Just before midday, there was a report about a woman who had not been seen or heard from for two days, whose mobile phone was not working, and who had a 1 year old child with her. Her car had been found abandoned in a remote mountain spot; taken there, Max immediately started on an open-area search in the locality (which an Inspector said left "a vast area to cover"). Max led PC Lloyd a significant distance to reach the mother and her infant by 1:30 pm. They were near the edge of a ravine. They were safe, but cold after spending a night in the open. A Police helicopter had assisted the search, but a 'focused' Max actually located the woman within those 2 hours.
