I'm curious about something. I have noticed on certain pages on the internet, Shepherds (both adults and puppies) who sit quite awkward. One hip may sit sort of normal, but the other one almost frog like if that makes sense; Or other similar positions. On the other hand I have seen other pictures where dogs sit normal. Is there a relation between the first one and bad hips in dogs? Do any of your guys dogs sit in awkward positions but have good rated hips?

My dog would lazy puppy sit all the time, she had excellent hips.

i asked the same question if it were a way of checking for good hips since they cant be using X-ray during Rittmeister time or even after he died.

As any possible correlation between puppy sitting adult dogs & loose ligaments (HD?) being vehemently refuted in some recent threads:

Why do some adult dogs tend to puppy-sit while most prefer to sit square?

They usually grow out of it, in my experience.

Sometimes not until they are fully mature - say about 4 years ! Roll eyes

Seriously, all my life some have said its a way to tell there is something wrong = HD or whatever ... and all my life I have never seen any proof of this.  So: No, no correlation.

In fact, just to give you a contrary example:

When I turned my Vida from a Showdog into an Obedience Dog, I had to make sure she was sitting up straight.  Now, sometimes, by her inclination, she sat 'normally', but on occasions she 'puppy sat' - she was 3 and a half when I started re-training her.  So I taught her to sit in the correct adult fashion all the time.  That animal had a BVA/KC hip score of 60 - which as well-informed Americans will know means the OFA would have thrown up its hands in horror !  Even so, not only did she learn to consistently sit properly, she never 'went off' her hips, i.e. never went lame all her life - and she lived to 14.

Tiger who is 7 months old sits to the side in the typical "puppy sit" position, her OFA preliminary evaluation was excellent hips and normal elbows.

An older dog of mine started the puppy sit, come to find out she injured a cruciate (sp?).

Hundmutter, maybe that LEARNED correct posture of sitting possibly helped that otherwise poor hipped dog to live normally for that long? Just like correct posture helps us humans reduce the possibilities of lumbar & cervical spondylosis?

I'm not claiming it's a way to tell that the dog is a future HD patient, there is no research to back that up. But there is also no research to prove the opposite.

There is in fact no definitive research to show us what causes HD and what doesn't.

Till that knowledge is available, IMHOP, the STAR contributors of reputed dog forums should refrain from posting definitive claims.

Unless, they have SECRETLY cracked the HD code, of course..

Sitasmom, yes, when an ADULT dog sits awkward, it's common sense, as is SHOWN by your example, that a vet should see the dog..
