I went to Petland in Montgomery, AL today with a friend.  They sell all kinds of pet supplies there, including dogs.  Among cages of Beagles, English bulldogs, Poodles and other breeds is a GSD female pup who's been for sale for 11 weeks.  Her price has gone from around $1,000 to a "sale" price of $368.  She is pitiful.  Lanky, dull coat, haunted eyes, she's small for her age - allegedly 6 months.  My 4 month old Cochise is twice her size.  No one seemed to know if she had a name.  Her price includes a free vet visit and a "registration" with the American Pet Club, whatever that is.  Her breeder is someone in Missouri, certified by the USDA, says the salepeople.  If I could have done so, I'd have bought her.  I can't.  But her eyes... I can't stop seeing her eyes.

I was going to come here and rant about this poor baby girl but I find I can't do that, either.  The sight of her in that cage ... heartbreaking.  I'm too angry to make much sense.  Forgive me, please.  I just don't know what to do.

Unfortunately, if you buy her, Petland will call that "breeder" and say, "Yes! the German Shepherd sold!  Send 2 more."

Of course they wanted the $1,000 for her, but I have no doubt that Petland and similar stores count on the hearts of breed lovers and that they don't mind the small build and haunted eyes - they know that that will attract a different sort of buyer.

I would think it would be an ACA registared dog .They come with a free vet check. That is why i do not go into pet stores or the dog pound.I come home crying,or worse I buy the dog and give it away.

Crystal at Petland says the breeder is Lou Cox from Chilocothe, Missouri.. not sure about the city's spelling.  She says - now - that the pup was born August 11, 2008, is a little skittish and answers to the name of "Marley".  The pup is black and pale tan, ears aren't up, or they weren't today.  Oh and her price is now $388.00.

wuzzup, you're right - it's ACA.  I wish I'd never gone into that store.

3 Yrs ago we lived in missouri. We walked into a petland and fell in love with an English bulldog who we purchased for 3k. At that time we had no idea that they came from puppy mills. He was an impulse buy. But we have given him a wonderful home. His breeders name is Diane Wilson out of Missouri, cant remember the city.  We now live in California and they just opened up a petland. We went in to see what they  had. Again we saw a english bulldog and I enquired about his breeder. It was the exact same breeder that we got our  boy from 3 years ago. I tried googling her name but was unable to find her.

If you notice all the dogs come from missouri.  I find that to be strange.
