Nothing but a Rainbow, have two of them, old one and a newer one.

The rainbow is kinda nasty cleaning out the water bowl, but does the trick. I too also have a Dyson animal and wouldn't trade it in for anything, it is kind of the BMW of vaccums.

yup, having to empty the dyson canister is probably my only complaint.  Also kinda gross to see all the dust and hair that the thing picks up.  :)

We now have two of them.  The older of the two still works rather well, but has been delegated to basement duty.  It really just needed a new brush and what not, but hubby decided to go out and get a new one.  Older one is on its 5th year.

Had Kenmore, had Hoover, had Sanyo...............have now Dyson Animal 17, and actual enjoy vacuuming! First use I was shocked how much my old vacuum left behind!

I was the same Elkoor.  I love the bagless, the old bagged vacuum that I had, created so much dust it was disgusting.  I guess the bagless ones are the next best thing to a central vacuum.

I too only have an area rug left in the living room.  I had it with the carpeting!

I have a Royal upright, and it works great -- all metal parts, it can stand up to lots of abuse (the dealer informs me that vacuuming up GSD hair is abuse!)

I believe where you live has something to do with it.

I live in the desert, and even the dysons don't fair that well.  The endless fine dust eventually clogs them inside.

I ended with a bagged Rikkor.

It's heavy, and a workhorse, but my other vacuums died after a year or two due to heavy internal clogging.
