Greetings All,

First time GSD owner, and I may be getting nervous for nothing, but as you can see from my avatar, Gunther's right ear has layed completely over. (pic taken on December 2nd)

He will be 3 months old ( December 9th) and we picked him up at 8 weeks. Both ears were up and looking great at week 9, then the right one layed down, and then the left one started to flop.

I know I am not supposed to worry until he is 4, 4 1/2 months old, but is there anything that we can do now ?

Gunther is a Karat's Ulko son, and our beeder told us that Ulko is not known to throw soft eared pups.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Vinegarjoe

Don't worry about your little guy yet.  the teething process takes it's toll on the ear stance and he is still so young, his muscles are working to develop enough strength to hold up the ears.  You can and should give him lots of meaty bones to chew on...this will help strengthen all the muscles that go up to his ears.  I would not do a thing except watch and enjoy the up and down process until 6 months.  At that time I would get professional help and tape the ears.  So try to relax.  He's a doll.

Puppy ears can go through all kinds of positions over the early months.  The ear position right now is totally normal.  If, by 5 months or so they aren't up again, then you'll likely have to tape them (search the messageboard archive for tons of info on this topic).

Cute puppy!

ditto to all things said, I think ears coming up is one of the biggest worries for new GSD owners, He's heading into the teething stage so the calcium that usually goes to his ears (and makes them stand up) is now being directed to his teeth. Best of luck with your new puppy

My puppy had both ears up at 14 weeks and by 24 weeks her right ear had flopped. She had a beginning stage ear infection. The vet gave us some stuff, and within a few days both ears were up again.

This puppy loves to swim and is in and out of our pool many times a day. We tried "swimmmers ear" and alchol, both with great puppy protest. So now we treat her ears with a few drops of white viniger every day and the proplem's solved.
