"Have DNA done and you will know for sure if it's a genetic coat or carrier. In some breeds the breeders are getting surprises when the dogs with the longest coats are testing as carriers while dogs with shorter coats are testing as longcoats. The big difference is that while carriers will produce fewer carriers, all puppies sired by longcoats will be carriers. Bottom line - I think the only way to be sure if you have a coat, plush or carrier is DNA. I'll also stick my neck out and say I'd also wager than most if not all plushes will either test as longcoats or carriers. Has anyone had the DNA done and were the results what you expected?"
Where do go to get this DNA test?

You can go to akc to order the kit , pay a fee.

akc DNA test is only for prooving parentage, not whether to determine long coat or stock coat.
the OFFA.org offers only DNA testing for genetic diseases, again not for long or stock coat testing.
I did find these two sites, not knowing how reliable this is ok, so can't recommend them.

I'm ordering a kit to have Bella tested. Will post the results when I get them back.

Though the least of our problems is an occassional long coat in a litter. It is interesting to find out eventually. I have no trouble getting long coats to pet homes. They are adored by many. Some absolutely only want a long coat. In the true german lines from Germany I have never seen a liver or a blue color so that seems not a big one.
I can assure you that in the upcoming P litter out of Eiko and Lana there will be long coats. I have had in Lana x Xaro J litter 3 long coats in a litter of 9. Eiko has had long coats in his first litter. It is the least of our problems as breeders.
DNA testing for health reasons makes a lot of sense for all involved, breeder, buyer and dog. and not necessarily in that order.

It looks like neither normal short hair or long hair is dominant.

VetGen is very reliable, I've used them several times with excellent results.
