If you notice all the dogs come from missouri.  I find that to be strange.

Not at all.  Missouri is one of the largest suppliers of puppies to pet stores.  Please look at these articles:

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/558799/missouri_is_the_puppy_mill_capital.html

http://www.maal.org/Puppy-Mills.asp

I know it's horrible, but if you buy that dog you ARE supporting puppy mills.

Find out the name of the breeder.

To what purpose?  Someone making a living by shipping puppies to pet stores all over the country is simply not going to care what we think about how they earn their money.

10 years ago, I rescued an Aussi that came from a puppy mill in Missouri, the owners wern't making enough money and walked, leaving all the dogs in cages to starve to death. Officials were called becasue neighbors complained about the stentch. My Mattie was saved at 6 weeks, she spent 3 weeks in critical care and another 3 weeks being watched. Puppy mills should be outlawed.

My 15 yr old American Eskimo came from Guardian Kennels in Missouri. They shipped her to a mall petshop chain (Pet Menagerie), here in MA, where my parents bought her. Like the GSD pup bamacat is talking about, my girl's price had been cut in half to $250. She was about 5 months old when we bought her. She actually turned out fine, no health or behavior problems..  My parents simply didn't know any better at the time; and I know there are people out there that aren't as lucky as we are with our 'petshop puppy'.

I feel for those poor pups that are in pet stores :-(   That is why I don't go into those places anymore. My first puppy I bought at 16 came from a pet store. She was a Shih-Tzu and lived for 13 1/2 years. I didn't obviously know better at the time but do now. Many years later after my shih-tzu passed I did go into another store and had to hold myself back from buying a gorgeous red and white blue eyed husky. Never, never have I even tempted to go back to those kinds of stores. If I did see a GSD in there like the one that started this post 9 times out of 10 I probably would pull her out and find her a very good home. There has to be some way to shut down these puppy mills.

"Someone please go get this poor pup."

Jackie, I'm going to sound hard-hearted, but getting this dog, putting money in this POS corporation's bottom line, dooms not only this pup's parents, but countless other dogs to a lifetime of pure hell.  Their pups may escape, but the parents, the "brood stock", live in hell.

I wouldn't buy a pup from a pet shop, no matter how sorry I may feel for it.

Jackie, you're a good person.  I hope you think about what you're asking.

Pet Store Puppy

I'm a little puppy, so cuddly, sweet and small
I live inside a cage you see, at the Pet Store in the mall.
I'm not an only puppy, my sisters are all here.
My brothers too, except for Ralph, who died coz he was scared.

It's lonely here at nighttime, when all the lights go dark,
We tremble in our cages, and we whimper and we bark.
But no one comes to hold us, or pet our fears away
We sit all night in terror, 'til the store opens next day

.
We don't remember mama, left so far behind
She did the best she could for us, 'til Man said "It is time."
He crammed us all in cages, too small for us you see
We rode for hours; we could not help but lay in poop and pee

And now we sit in Pet Store, where kids come taunt and squeeze
They do not hear our whimpers, or understand our pleas
We're miserable and it's scary here, we all would rather die
But since we don't, we do our best, to run away and hide

I know you think my story, too sad to leave me be
You want to take me home with you; a happy little puppy.
But please, though it is fearful to live here against our will
If you take me, that leaves a spot another pup will fill.

You can stop our suffering, but not by taking us home
You must be strong and leave us here, unsold and all alone
For if you do not take me, then another pup won't come
And maybe he will not be shipped, so far away from home

Tho some of us may not survive, the cycle 'ere it falls
If we don't sell, they will not need more puppies in these halls
And if they need no puppies, then the Man will not bring more
Eventually it can all stop! You CAN close the door.

So when you see a puppy's face, so sad and sweet and small
In a cage at Pet Store, at your neighborhood shopping mall
The best thing you can do for him, is leave him sitting there
That is the best way you can tell all dogs, how much you care.

25 years ago, I bought a female Doberman from a pet store in NYC. I paid "way toooo much for her", her feet were bent at the ankles from being in that crate for so long. I don't even like Red Dobies, but there was no way of walking past her and leaving her there.

And , low and behold, she was from Missouri!  She wasn't much for looks as far as Dobermans go, But she was one of the best dogs I ever had. VERY, appreeciative for the Love and Care she got. I had many years of Devoted service from this POOR little girl.

If I were there, I 'd go get that little pup!!

This happens far too often in this country... It truly is a heartbreaking story.

I was assistant manager at Petland here in Cincy for years. The horror of what really goes on in the petstores is something that will give you nightmares for life time. I have not set foot into a Petland since years ago. How they "price" the pup is just disturbing.

1. Pup is chosen off a list that is faxed to your store from the Broker in Mo. that tells you what kind of pups they have.

2. Pup is then shipped to your store, where you look at pup from the back of the filthy truck..and if its cute enough..you accept it. If not, it goes back to broker, then to breeder.

3. Pup comes in, placed in the window with the sign that says.. "Im new! I cant come out right now, because I need to be checked by the vet"

4. Take purchase price of lets say $250.00, and immedietly multiply by 165%. and get roughly $665.00

5. If pup has "champions" in the pedigree..add $100.00

6. If the pup is REALLY cute..add $100.00 MORE

7. If the pup is a "rare breed".. (ie bulldogs, whippits, and the sort) you would multiply the original purchase price by 250%...

8. Put price in window + 14 day gurantee!

Then- When customers come in, get puppy out, put the puppy in the the customers arms in the play room. (this is how each employee is trained, put the animal in the customers hands) Expecailly if they have children. And then point out that there are champions in the pedigree, which makes them worth the $1000.00 we charge!!!!

Now, when that little shihtzu pup comes in, that is really small, and really tiny, and cute.. stops breathing.. and I have to take this pup, doing CPR in the car...to the vet that services the store..that is 50min away... and the pup dies..in my arms.... Genetic heart defect. :(

When I buy the Siberian Husky at cost that has the same male as stud in her pedigree, on BOTH sides, over 5 times.... lives to be 5, after 6000.00 in vet fees, for autoimmune disease, teeth pulling, meds, allergies, and so forth.. and have to finally put her down at 5years, to end her suffering. Her tail didnt wag any more. I couldnt bear to stand it anymore.

When I look at a customer..and say..its not part of the gurantee... to have that customer go home, and take a sick/dying pup home to their kids..to watch die.

That is when I quit. And never looked back, and spread the word. Puppy Mills feed the Petland Store chain. Always have, and Always will. As much as it hurts. Leave her there. It only opens up a spot for another to come in...and begin to suffer, just like the ones before it.

People have no idea. None. Of what goes on in the filthy petstores. Sickness, death, mistreatment.. It is the "Norm"..
