hello all,
i was wondering about how much learning my girl could do at 6 months old. she completed puppy preschool 2 months ago, and have been still working on leash with her. at this age how long should i work with her at a time- 10, 15, 20 minutes? I'm just wondering what her puppy brain can handle at this age.   thanks,  jim

jimbo
Keep the sessions short and exciting.
Several 2-3 minute sessions are more
than enough daily. End with the pup
wanting 'more'.
Use food or a toy, whatever will
motivate her the best. Sometimes
just your praise and excitement
alone is enough to do it, but
almost any puppy will sell their soul
for a bit of food. If you go with food,
use something moist so she doesn't
have to chew anything dry.
Natural Balance meat rolls are good,
alot of dog people use frozen Bil Jac
as well, or, any kind of meat works.
We generally get whatever meat is cheapest,
usually chicken thighs, boil it up and then cube
it up for training. No additives etc.
Not as messy either.

that's my girl, if food is involved she's all over it. i never thought about cooking some chicken and using it. we are using training treats from the pet store. at what age should i start increasing the training sessions. we just want a well behaved girl, and someday have her trainged off leash so we can go to the park and play ball to give her some good exercise. i do use alot of praise as well.

Puppies are sponges, teach everything you can
while she is young and will work so easily for a treat!
When you can walk her for 3 miles without ever
correcting once, you can take the leash off

Seriously, I can't tell you when you can
do off leash, thats something you will have
to figure out based on her progress. Just
don't rush her, if you try to take a shortcut,
it will set you back!

For now? Have fun with her and most
important, make it fun for HER!

it's funny you say that about the 3 miles. when we go on our walks, the first 1.5 miles she does awesome with the loose leash walk, no problems at all. but, when we turn around to head back home is when it's not so good. she doesn't pull so hard that she's dragging us, but it's not anywhere near a loose leash. don't understand why the first half is so good, and the second half isn't.

Because she knows where she is going
