GSDNewbie

by GSDNewbie on 13 October 2011 - 17:10

I broke my wrist yesterday so I guess it is a great time to relax and work on my training plans.

I have always taught a tradition dog behind the handler to heel position. My current pup is a high energy and flashy worker who is extremely athletic. I am considering teaching him the military style flip to heel. How many use this? I only consider it because I think he would think it very fun and he likes challanges like this, which is preferred in sch? Are there multiple ways to teach it? We have already worked on heel position and we have done body awarness excersies and position in relation to me work. Is there anything else to prepare him I should be doing? Does anyone have negative thoughts on this over traditional? I want to research it well as I prefer to train somthing correctly the first time arround than to have to correct something I taught wrong.

     Thank you in advance.

I originally taught the go around finish with my pitbull and had her do that for her BH. but I switched her to the military finish/flip finish. I like it MUCH better.

I taught my showline the military finish. I worked on rear end awareness by doing brick work. I personally like it way better and choose to do it with all my dogs.

This is the way I teach it

Oh lol I have already done that using a bucket. I use it to make a better heel. I train both directions using a bucket with direction commands.

Thank you though for the brick video as it looks to be a better way to do it. The bucket is too high in my opinion and light.

Thanks so much for posting that video, I have been having problems with my dog getting his flip finish all the way to straight, I think he needs better awareness of his rear and this should help him - cool

That was a cool video! I too have always taught the traditional finish, I have never used brick work with my guys but that was pretty cool! Nala is my flashy girl and she hasn't gotten to the finish yet, and she loves it when you switch things up durring training, we are definately going to have to try some brick work now. Thanks for the video.  Sorry to hear about your wrist GSDNewbie.

If you have any thoughts of trying rally, you may want to teach your dog both finishes.

Blitzen why would you want to teach both finishes for rally? Does Rally require the go around behind finish?

by Blitzen on 16 October 2011 - 17:10

Yes, there is a call front, finish right, forward; a call front, finish right, halt. The same 2 with a finish left. The finish right is the go around the handler finish, I use "fuss" for that one. And of course the finish left is the military finsh, I just say "left" for that one. Dogs pickup the difference pretty fast and in rally you are allowed to use  hand signals at the same time as the verbal command.
