A very dear friend of mine was mauled by one of his own dogs yesterday. He slipped on wet grass and landed beside the dog. Dog seized the opportunity and bit the ever loving out of him. ( 30 some odd stitches) I think every once in a while we need a reminder that dogs are still dogs.... Keep sharp fellow trainers.

I hope he is ok. I always shake my head when I hear someone say "I trust my dog 100%". It is still a dog. I trust mine 98% because they are still dogs and there is that 2% that will remind me every time

If my own dog ever gave me thirty stiches it would be an immediate ticket to Dog Heaven.
There is more to this story than is written here. And yes they are still dogs, but 30 stiches is 30 stiches.
No excuse for that, I would question the bond between handler & dog and the training methods used on the dog.

No he didnt land on him at all but beside. It was a male rott. The dog had handler ( quite frankly every type of aggression) aggression issues from day one. There was always a very delicate dance between these two. Dog saw him in a submissive position and went for it. Kim, I dont think there was ever a bond between these two. Some dogs are just plain dangerous...... Beetree I land, fall, trip over my dogs all the time never had one even think about attacking me for it. ( it happens when you move as fast as i do and are about as graceful as a three legged girraffe :) just reminding people that dogs is dogs and we really should keep sharp. I for one forget sometimes and have put myself in some really stupid situations. Fortunately for me nothing bad has ever happened...

Dogs are still dogs, and animals, but dogs that attack me without provocation like in that handlers case, do get the ticket to dog heaven, as Kim said.
It's just not necessary to keep this kind of dog on the planet when there are many more who are worth it.

If I fall down beside any of my dogs the most I ever get is a lick, a tail wag, and a dog who stands beside me so I can put my hand on his back to help me get back up. That's how it should be. I've only fallen a few times, whether I tripped over something, or when my youngest "pup" walked in front of me when he was younger... but as the others said, if a dog attacks the one you mentioned and it was unprovoked.... Well, Doggy heaven awaits....or Doggy hell in that case.

Very sorry to hear such a tragic situation. Something very fundamental missing though ..... relationship and respect.
The Owner/trainer should have been aware of issues with the dog, before such dire escalation.

Wow, it does happen but I'm with PiratesLair if my dog every did anything close to that I would have put him down. If we as trainers can't control them you know the general public won't be able to and that is a very dangerous situation. Hope your friend gets to feeling better soon. Both physically and emotionally has to be an even harder hit when it comes from one of your guys and he inevitably knows what has to be done.
